Conjunctions
  • Are like links in a chain
  • help join words and ideas
  • The conjunction you use indicates the
    relationship between the words or groups of words
    connected.
  • Definition a word that connects words or groups
    of words.

Coordinating Conjunctions
  • Definition Coordinating Conjunctions connect
    similar groups of words.
  • Examples of coordinating conjunctions
  • Remember the word FANBOYS to easily name these
    7 coordinating conjunctions.
  • Myra and Bernice are science lab partners.

    well talk about that in a few slides ?)

CORRELATIVE CONJUNCTIONS
  • Do you see any words inside the name of this
    conjunction that you recognize?
  • Do you see the word relate? Look again. Do you
    see it now? Its there!

  • These conjunctions relate two things. They come
    in pairsalways.
  • either or
  • neither nor (use this when negatively speaking
    about two choices)
  • whether or
  • Neither Jason nor Bob wanted to go to the movie

  • Either Mrs. Tonelli or your study hall teacher
    will be able to explain.

Subordinating Conjunctions
  • These conjunctions are just the first words of
    phrases that start a sentence and need a comma
    after them (adverb clauses). Just like transition
    words!
  • Some common SUBORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS are the
    same words you might chose for a transition word
    in an essay
  • after before though whenever
  • although if unless where
  • as since until wherever
  • because than when while
  • Because Jan was late to the concert, I was angry.
  • (Its like moving the second part of a sentence
    to the front instead!)
