First, you need to understand high blood
pressure reading. Doctor Dora states that
hypertension is defined by the World Health
Organization as a systolic BP of 140 mm Hg or
more and a diagnostic BP of 90 mm Hg or more.
However, the American Heart Association adopts
strict criteria. Stage one hypertension is
defined as systolic BP of 130 mm Hg or more and
diastolic BP of 80 mm Hg or more. Stage 2
hypertension is defined Systolic BP of 140 mm Hg
or more and diastolic BP of 90 mm Hg or more.

Dr Santosh Kumar Dora, the senior cardiologist at
the Asian Heart Institute, Mumbai, says that high
blood pressure is found 22 in people under 20
and 44 in people aged 20 to 44 years. He added
that in my practice more than 50 of cases have
been found in people who are in the age group of
20 to 40 years old.
This trend is worrying. Common causes of such
increased incidence of high blood pressure are
lack of physical activity, obesity, excess salt
consumption, smoking etc. To prevent high blood
pressure healthy lifestyle should be promoted and
the action should be taken at all levels
including individuals and institutions.

of people around the world.  Earlier this
condition was more prevalent among the elderly
but now it is also becoming common in the younger
population. 
People between the ages of 40 and 60 fall into
the former category and the latter category
consists mainly of lifestyle issues of 25 to 40
years old people like smoking, drinking alcohol,
bad eating habits, lack of physical activity etc.
Doctors say that nowadays non-hereditary cases
are increasing and they warn that this situation
