INTRODUCTION
  • Tonsillitis refers to an inflammation of the two
oval-shaped pads of tissue at the back of the
    throat.
  • It is most common in children over the age of
two, adults can also get tonsillitis but it is
    mostly because of a virus.
  • Tonsils act as filters, trapping germs that could
otherwise enter your airways and cause infection,
but sometimes they get filled by bacteria or
other virus which results into tonsillitis.
  • A normal tonsillitis can get cured on its own,
but the ones caused by bacteria requires medical
    assistance.

CAUSES
  • Tonsillitis are most often caused by different
viruses. The virus that cause common cold are
often the source of tonsillitis. The viruses that
    cause tonsillitis are Rhinovirus, Epstein-Barr
    virus, Hepatitis A, HIV.
  • Tonsillitis can also be cause by various
bacteria. The most common bacterium causing
tonsillitis is Streptococcus pyogenes. Around 15
to 30 tonsillitis are the result of bacterial
    tonsillitis.
  • Tonsils are your first line of defence against
any bacteria or illness. They produce white blood
cells to fight against any kind of bacteria
    leading to infections or illness.
  • It can also spread from a person to person.
Tonsillitis transfers by air through cough,
    sneezing or saliva.
  • Basically, a close contact with a person
diagnosed with tonsillitis causes it in your
    mouth.

7
DIAGNOSIS
  • The first thing any doctor does is a physical
check-up. The doctor uses a lighted instrument to
check your throat and he may also check your ears
    and nose.
  • Then, he may check for scarlatina which is
associated with some cases of steep throat.
  • Your doctor may take the throat culture or throat
swab culture which helps to find out infections
in the throat. Which may include strep throat,
    pneumonia, tonsillitis, whooping cough and
    meningitis.
  • He can also take your blood sample. This helps to
find out whether your tonsillitis is bacterial or
    just viral.

8
TREATMENT
  • The treatment mainly depends on the type of
tonsillitis. It can be treated at home, with the
help of medicines or in certain case it may
    require surgery.
  • Self-care The person diagnosed with
tonsillitis requires proper rest and most of his
diet should include liquid food. Tea with honey
and salt water gargle helps cure tonsillitis.
Throat lozenge also helps to sooth the throat and
    delivers pain relief.
  • Medications Medication include Nonsteroidal
    anti-inflammatory drug which decreases
inflammation, Analgesic which acts as a pain
reliever, Penicillin which helps to stop the
    growth or kills bacteria.
  • Tonsillectomy It refers to surgical removal of
the tonsils. It usually performed in the case of
    sleep-disordered breathing or when the
tonsillitis occur frequently and doesnt respond
to other treatments. It may also require to treat
breathing and other problems associated with
tonsils. The recovery time for tonsillectomy is
    ususally 10 to 12 days
