INTRODUCTION

• Septoplasty is a surgical procedure to straighten
  the bone and cartilage dividing the space between
  your two nostrils.
• It corrects the shape of the deviated septum of
  the nose. A deviated septum can make it harder to
  breathe through your nose and can increase the
  risk of sinus infections due to poor drainage.

WHY IT IS DONE

• A deviated septum can block one side of your nose
  and reduce airflow, causing difficulty while
  breathing through one or both sides of your nose.
• Septoplasty straightens the nasal septum by
  trimming, repositioning and replacing cartilage,
  bone or both.
• If symptoms such as difficulty breathing, sleep
  apnoea, nasal septal deformity, tumour excision
  are experienced then, this surgery is needed.

PREPARATION

• The doctor will get to know about the patients
  medical history. The doctor will ask about any
  past condition or the medication patient is
  having or had.
• Then, the doctor will conduct a physical
  examination. The doctor will inspect the skin and
  inside and outside of nose.
• If the patient is a smoker then the doctor will
  suggest him to stop smoking few days before the
  surgery.

PROCEDURE

• The goal of septoplasty is to improve breathing
  through the nose and also to prevent sinus
  infection.
• The procedure involves an excision of a portion
  of cartilage and bone.
• The incision is made in the lining of the septum
  to reach the cartilage.
• The septum may then be stabilized with small
  plastic tubes, splints or nasal packs to stop
  bleeding.

RECOVERY

• After the surgery is performed the doctor may ask
  the patient to follow some precautions.
• The doctor may suggest the patient to,
• Not elevate head while sleeping.
• Not blowing the nose for several weeks.
• Wear comfortable clothes.
• Avoid strenuous activities, such as aerobics and
  jogging.

RESULTS

• The nasal tissues gets stable by 3 to 6 weeks of
  the surgery. Most people find that the
  septoplasty improves their symptoms, such as
  difficulty of breathing.
• But the level of improvement varies from person
  to person. Some people find that their symptoms
  continue even after surgery and opt to undergo a
  second septoplasty to further refine the nose and
  septum.
