• Omega 3s and specifically the omega 3 fatty acid
  DHA are central to the whole of the central
  nervous system

• This is especially true in the eye and the
  delicate retina which houses the photoreceptors
  that allow us to see

• The retina is the area that is affected in
  macular degeneration

• Macular Degeneration is a relatively common
  problem that is normally age related and often
  called Age related macular Degeneration (AMD)

• There are 2 types of macular degeneration, Wet
  and Dry Macular Degeneration, and they both
  affect the part of the retina responsible for
  central vision called the macula

• Macular degeneration is characterized by blurred
  vision or a blindspot in the centre of you
  vision, and can progress slowly or more quickly

• Currently there are no known cures for macular
  degeneration, only treatments to slow its
  progress, however

Scientific Evidence for the Effectiveness of
Omega 3 on Macular Degeneration

• There have been several studies into Omega 3 and
  macular degeneration

• They have found that the risk for developing
  macular degeneration is reduced the more dietary
  intake of omega 3 is increased

• And also that higher dietary intakes of omega 3
  slow the progress of macular degeneration to
  advanced levels

• One study showed that eating oily fish once a
  week can decrease the risk of developing macular
  degeneration by 50

• However these studies focussed on dietary omega 3
  rather than Omega 3 fish oil supplementation.
  Next we will look at studies that have focused on
  fish oil supplementation

Omega 3 Fish Oil Supplementation and Macular
Degeneration

• There have so far been 3 long term studies on
  macular degeneration and fish oil
  supplementation. They have all used different
  dosages of omega 3, and a clear pattern has
  emerged.

• The first study used a dose of 1000mg of omega 3
  per day, with 650mg of EPA and 350mg of DHA

• It found that that dosage of omega 3 did not slow
  the progression macular degeneration to advanced
  stages

• The second study increased the dosage of omega 3
  to 1100mg a day, but used a much higher
  concentration of DHA at 840mg a day

• They found that in study participants with the
  highest levels of blood DHA there was a 67
  reduction of new blood vessels forming

• The formation then leakage and scarring of new
  blood vessels causes a loss of vision in people
  with macular degeneration

• However, this dosage of omega was not able to
  actually improve peoples sight

• The third study used a much higher dosage of
  omega 3 - 5000mg per day, with 3400mg of EPA and
  1600mg of DHA

• This dosage caused a remarkable change in the
  study participants, with 100 of them not just
  slowing the rate of progression, but actually
  significantly improving their eyesight

• The participants all experienced a significant
  improvement in sight within 4.5 months of
  starting this dosage, and some starting noticing
  an improvement in just a few days

• The studies clearly indicate that people
  suffering from macular degeneration should
