What are Roots?
  • Roots are underground parts of a plant. They
anchor the plant in the ground. Roots absorb
water and minerals from the surrounding soil.
They then transport these materials to the base
of the stem. Some plants like carrots also store
food in their roots. Depending on the surface
area of the roots the amount of nutrients and
    minerals varies.

Adventitious Roots
  • Adventitious roots are roots that grow from stems
    and leaves.
  • Corn, orchids, ivy, vines are examples of
    Adventitious roots.
  • Ivy and vines get nutrients and minerals from the
    surrounding air.

Taproots
  • A taproot is a root in which the first root
    becomes the largest root.
  • Carrots and certain trees have taproots.
  • Taproots rarely penetrate the ground more than a
    meter or two.
  • A few species such as Cottonwoods have roots that
grow up to 164 feet that touch underground water
    supplies.
