Title: Havisham

1
Havisham
  • By Carol Ann Duffy

2
Attitudes and ideas!
  • This poem is about a woman that was jilted on her
wedding day by the love of her life. The
character is based on Miss Havisham from the
novel Great Expectations by Charles Dickens.
  • She has mixed feelings of love and hatred about
her fiancé, shown by the phrase Loves/ hate.
  • She has not changed a thing since her wedding
    day, even her clothes
  • I stink and remember
  • This shows she cannot get over him leaving her.

3
Themes, features, and characters
  • Themes
  • Violence
  • Love
  • Death
  • Hate
  • Violence and death feature because she wants to
    kill him for humiliating her.
  • Love features because she loves him and hates
him because of what he did to her. This shows
how she is feeling towards the man that left
    her.
  • Beloved sweetheart bastard

4
Language
  • Beloved sweetheart bastard shows that she loves
him and hates him at the same time. This is
called oxymoron. Another example is Loves/
hate which shows her mixed feelings to the man
    who left her.
  • Metaphor is used in the phrase
  • Ive dark green pebbles for eyes
  • This shows how this has hardened her view on
life. The colour green could also represent the
jealousy she feels for her fiancé's new love.

5
Language and close text analysis
  • Beloved and bastard show alliteration that
helps link these words together to show how these
conflicting emotions are linked inside her.

6
Alternative interpretation.
  • Dont think its only the heart that
    b-b-b-breaks.
  • This could mean she is broken hearted. It could
also mean that Havisham loved him so much she
doesnt want to marry anyone else and she doesnt
want to carry on with her life.

7
Structure
  • It is a monologue giving Havisham a realistic
    voice.
  • The second and third stanza is a run on which
helps the poem flow like normal speech. A run
on, or enjambment is when the end of the line
carries on to the next line without a full stop
    or punctuation mark.
  • Duffy uses enjambment to split Loves/hate in
the poem to show Havishams conflict of love and
    hate.

8
What does it compare to?
  • The Laboratory lost love/ desire for
    revenge.
  • Anne Hathaway relationships
  • November death
