2
QoS in Multihop Networks
  • Network layer QoS support
  • MAC layer QoS support
  • Testbed progress

3
Network Layer QoS Support
  • Developed a framework, called PANDA, that
integrates QoS requirements during the path
    discovery process
  • Based on various QoS and security attributes
PANDA helps in the discovery of QoS-satisfying
paths by selecting the best next-hop node.
  • The best next-hop node is selected locally
    without any additional communication overheads.
  • Evaluation using NS-2 shows
  • Improved path performance in terms of end-to-end
    delay and delivery ratio
  • More than 50 energy savings
  • Increases network lifetime
  • Very low overheads

4
MAC Layer QoS Support
  • Using per-hop service differentiation to achieve
    the end-to-end requirements
  • The QoS specification is translated to per-hop
    requirements
  • At every hop, based on the per-hop requirements,
the packets are prioritized into the queues
    (similar to IEEE 802.11e implementation)
  • We have developed a framework that facilitates
  • Load-aware routing and path discovery
  • Admission control by probing the resource
    availability in the routes
  • Dynamic per-hop priority based channel access

5
Testbed Progress
  • We have built an ad hoc network with 12 nodes
  • Tested for a maximum of 6-hop communications
  • Currently developing tools for logging and
measuring various performance and other metrics.
These tools, when ready, will be made available
    to other researchers.
  • Plans are underway to increase the size and
incorporate QoS support in the testbed

Related Efforts
  • Other efforts that are being leveraged from the
    NRT support
  • Multicasting in mobile ad hoc networks (Infocom
    2004)
