Core Courses
  • The following core course descriptions are
    for individuals who are living with HIV/AIDS. The
    courses are apart of the Wellness University
    Curriculum and requirements for completion of the
    program conducive to specific wellness goals.
  • HIV 101- The HIV 101 Course will expound on the
    transmission, pathogenesis, epidemiology,
    screening, diagnosis, and treatment of HIV. The
    course will also provide a learning experience
    that will empower the participants to understand
    the basic facts about HIV/AIDS.
  • Nutrition and Health- This course provides
    information and instruction in nutrition and
    health education that describes the role of
    nutrition and HIV/AIDS. To identify the
    nutritional sources that addresses immune
    function and balance. There is an offsite
    cooking class associated with the course. The
    cooking class demonstrates cooking on a budget
    while maintaining a nutritious diet.
  • Mens and Womens Financial Literacy- This course
    provides financial education that will give
    participants a better understanding of their
    finances.  The course addresses banking,
    budgeting, predatory lending, debt management and
    spending strategies. The Rise Foundation partners
    with Friends For Life to provide financial
    education to consumers.
  • Medication and Wellness- This course is designed
    to encourage participants to apply adherence
    strategies such as medication compliance and HIV
    treatment to their lives. The course also
    provides a basis to understanding medication side
    effects. A Walgreens pharmacist facilitates the
    course.

Core Courses
  • Understand Substance Abuse and HIV- Participants
    engage in class discussions regarding how
    substance abuse impacts their lives and HIV/AIDS
    status. Modules of the 12 Step program are
    utilized. Participants will learn anger
    management and cognitive skills exercises as a
    tool to aid in the recovery process.
  • Life Skills- The participants will understand how
    to craft a detailed vision of their independent
    adult future and create a clear and specific
    picture of possibilities. They will learn an
    array of life skills to build confidence
    necessary to reach their goals. Life skills
    include identifying a preferred lifestyle,
    researching independent living, identify job,
    career, and vocational options, align lifestyle
    mission, explore educational options and
    outcomes, setting lifestyle goals, making
    commitments, and exploring giving back to the
    community.
  • Career Development- This course will assist
    participants in identifying skills, interests,
    abilities, goals, and values as they relate to
    careers. With this information, students will
    explore career fields related to the discipline
    that they are interested in and assess if these
    fields are personally a good fit. Participants
    will write a resume, cover letter, and learn
    interviewing techniques.
  • Music Therapy-The participants will use sounds
    and singing to relieve emotions as a means of
    psychotherapy treatment. The participants play
    instruments and dance to the sound of the music.
  • Sexual Health- This course provides instruction
    in HIV/AIDS sexual responsibility, transmission
    prevention, current information on contraception,
    and sexually transmitted infections. Group
    discussion, support, and participation is
    encouraged to promote effective communication on
    the topic of sexual health.

Purpose
  • The curriculum of the Wellness University is
    designed to help persons with HIV/AIDS develop
    skills to live a high quality life.

Mission
The mission of the Wellness University (WU)
program is to assist in the development of
quality lifestyles for people living with
HIV/AIDS though education, vocational referrals,
medical adherence, and related social activities.

Wellness University
  • The Wellness University is a community-wide
    medical adherence program that coordinates the
    medical treatment and supportive services of
    persons with HIV/AIDS. This is accomplished
    through a Wellness Plan that provides
    clients/students with skills necessary to live a
    high quality of life with HIV/AIDS. Credits are
    earned as students utilize medical treatment and
    supportive services. These credits can then be
    used for incentives as they complete their
    "Degree in Wellness."

Admission Criteria
All persons admitted to the Wellness University
must have a HIV/AIDS diagnosis and willing to
commit to maintaining medical adherence with
their individualized Wellness Plan to the best of
their ability.

Wellness Plan
  • Each student, with the assistance from the
    Wellness Program staff, will develop an
    individualized Wellness Plan that meets his/her
    specific needs. This plan will be used by the
    student to determine the curriculum chosen to
    earn credits towards graduation.

HIV 101
  • The HIV 101 Course expounds on the transmission,
    pathogenesis, epidemiology, screening, diagnosis,
    and treatment of HIV. The course will also
    provide a learning experience that will empower
    the participants to understand the basic facts
    about HIV/AIDS. This is a two part course.

Nutrition and Health
  • This course provides information and instruction
    in nutrition and health education that explores
    the role of nutrition and HIV/AIDS.
  • Participants identify the nutritional sources
    that address immune function and balance. There
    is an offsite cooking class associated with the
    course. The cooking class demonstrates cooking on
    a budget while maintaining a nutritious diet.

Sexual Health
  • This course provides instruction in HIV/AIDS
    sexual responsibility, transmission prevention,
    current information on contraception, and
    sexually transmitted infections. Group
    discussion, support, and participation is
    encouraged to promote effective communication on
    the topic of sexual health.

Understanding Substance Abuse
  • Participants engage in class discussions on the
    affects of substance abuse and HIV/AIDS
    diagnosis. Modules of the 12 Step program are
    utilized. Participants will learn anger
    management, relapse prevention, and cognitive
    skills exercises tools in the recovery process.

Career Development
  • This course will assist participants in
    identifying skills, interests, abilities, goals,
    and values as they relate to careers. With this
    information, students will explore career fields
    related to the profession of interest.
    Participants will write a resume, cover letter,
    and learn interviewing techniques.
  • There is a curriculum CD/PPT located in the
    sleeve of Wellness University curriculum binder.

Life Skills
  • The participants will understand how to craft a
    detailed vision of their independent adult future
    and create a clear and specific picture of
    possibilities. They will learn an array of life
    skills to build confidence necessary to reach
    their goals. Life skills include identifying a
    preferred lifestyle, researching independent
    living, identify job, career, and vocational
    options, align lifestyle mission, explore
    educational options and outcomes, setting
    lifestyle goals, making commitments, and
    exploring giving back to the community. FFL
    purchased the Life Skills curriculum and it can
    be accessed at http//www.pikespeaklearning.com
  • Login and password must be obtain by the Wellness
    Program Manager.

Music Therapy
  • The participants will use sounds and singing to
    relieve emotions as a means of psychotherapy
    treatment. The participants play instruments and
    dance to the sound of the music. Participants
    will also be encouraged to be creative tool for
    individual expression.

Financial Literacy
  • This course provides financial education that
    will give participants a better understanding of
    their finances.  The course addresses banking,

    education to consumers. There is a mens and
    womens financial literacy class.

  • This course is designed to encourage participants
