What is Social Networking?
  • Social Networking is a hot new topic
  • But what is it?
  • Its a broad subject area means slightly
    different things to different people!

3
What is a Social Network?
  • A social network is a group of people (or
organizations or other social entities) connected
by a set of social relationships, such as
    friendship, co-working or information exchange.
  • Its typically NOT so much about teams or small
groups but large numbers of loosely connected
    like minded people.

4
What is Social Networking?
  • Social Networking is about creating and
supporting social networks by allowing people to
find, connect and communicate with each other.

5
The Role of Technology
  • It is being driven by technology (Internet) - by
the fact that technology allows us to connect
communicate to many more people than we could in
    the past
  • The technology can also be used to help organize
    face to face meetings
  • And to analyze connections

Social Networking Tools
  • But what ties all these products, technologies
    and services together?
  • What distinguishes a social tool?
  • Should we include
  • email, wikis, chat rooms, discussion forums,
    communities of practice, other collaborative
    tools?

8
What is a Social Tool?
  • A tool or service that allows a large number
of people who do not necessarily know each other
to find other people with whom to work, share
knowledge, sell to, date or engage with for a
    host of other reasons.
  • OR a tool to analyze social networks
  • Tools such as email, wikis, communities of
practice are on the fringe by this definition

9
What is Social Networking?
  • What we are concerned with today is how SN can be
used in business and the benefits!
  • We are not covering the public SN tools such as
Ryze etc. or tools such as Wikis
  • Though such products and technologies are slowly
moving from the net into our organizational
    lives.
