1
  • obesity programme for schools

2
The programme development has been in 3 phases.
  • 1. A curriculum based obesity
  • programme.
  • 2. A fitness testing programme having
  • whole school impact.
  • 3. Primary Schools fitness/healthy
  • programme engaging parents and children.

3
How can we help ?
  • Offering advice.
  • Offering after school activities.
  • Suggesting taking part or joining a club outside
of school or an OSHL Club.
  • Try to improve ways that they are involved in P.E
    in school.
  • More contact with the school nurses and parents.
  • Bringing in specialist help.
  • Develop fitness testing programme for whole
    school.
  • Fits into existing PE curriculum.
  • Easy to use software that will record students
results and give them a Fitness Rating Index.
  • Fitness Rating Index added to the students report
    card.
  • PE department can use data to help raise
    attainment levels through target setting.
  • Help develop Gifted and Talented students focus
    on weak areas of fitness.
  • Identify students at risk and encourage them to
join the Fit 4 Life programme.

4
All of the above
  • At Baverstock School we have taken the initiative
    on all these issues.
  • We have an excellent after school service with a
    varied program, involving 26 sports
  • i.e. Weight Lifting, Gymnastics, Fencing,
    Wrestling.
  • These are just a small selection of what we offer
    to our pupils.
  • Some of the pupils compete at a very high level
    in these sports.

5
Phase 1Who should be targeted ?
  • At Baverstock we have put into place a programme
were we are addressing the above issues.
  • We have decided to concentrate our attentions on
    years Key stage 3 4
  • These students will be tested and trained in
    small groups.
  • All students will be fitness rated and have
    individual fitness profiles.
  • Fitness tests introduced into primary Schools.

6
The specialist
  • With the help of local P.C.T, we have been able
to obtain and fund the services of a personal
    trainer.
  • This has enabled the school to target pupils
with an Obesity, self - esteem and other health
    related problems.
  • Help develop meaningful fitness tests.
  • Train P.E staff to conduct tests in accordance
    with statutory requirements and departmental
    needs.

7
Setting goals
  • We have established a very easy to follow package
that can measure the students nutritional and
    fitness levels.
  • All students volunteer to join the programme.
  • Parents are involved from the very beginning and
    their input welcomed.
  • A fitness testing programme has been developed
and information used to develop students fitness
targets and help shape the P.E Curriculum.

8
Why is this necessary ?
  • The advantages are that the pupil has the
opportunity to take part in sport, and at the
same time have a specific individual training
    programme.
  • These children sometimes feel intimidated by
their peers, and are conscious of their
    condition.
  • We try to incorporate the students normal lesson
skills into the programme i.e. football, hockey,
    and badminton.
  • To help students, parents and the school to have
a better understanding of fitness and to focus on
national agendas regarding obesity and the Health
    of the Nation.

9
Can parents help ?
  • It is essential that the family is involved from
the start and throughout the programme.
  • We have found out with the involvement of the
family, that progress is more enjoyable and less
    lonely than undertaken by themselves.
  • This also helps with nutritional intake and
    joining outside clubs.
  • Parents attending reporting sessions are able to
ask questions and become involved in the fitness
    and welfare of their children.

10
Training at home
  • When designing a home programme we try
  • to consider their hobbies and interests, we
  • try to make it as fun as possible.
  • Consider the following.
  • Play station with dance mat.
  • Bike ride.
  • Playing football.
  • Walking to school, shops.

11
Who is involved and their roles
EXTENDED SCHOOLS
EVERY CHILD MATTERS
12
How are they involved
  • Head Teacher Sanctions the programme
  • School Nurse Selects student and mediate with
    parents.
  • Parents supports and monitor training and
    nutrition plans at home.
  • P.E Department help select student and support
    programme.
  • Sports Coordinator Fund raiser, monitor the
    effectiveness of the programme.
  • Trainer Train student design training programme,
give nutritional advice, support to students and
    parents.

13
What have we done ?
  • We have an established programme
  • that has had good results.
  • GPs collect data
  • The students have lost weight.
  • Their confidence has risen.
  • Their self-respect has increased.
  • They are gaining in fitness and now understand
the importance of fitness and nutrition.

14
How can we make it better ?
  • When setting up a programme like
  • this, there should be a initial meeting
    between parents, nurse and trainer.
  • Regular meetings between staff involved.
  • A closer look at software used.
  • Exercise equipment purchased.
  • Should we be involving any other local and
    national agencies?

15
FUN!
16
How can it work for you ?
  • It fits in with the Every Child Matters agenda
  • Provides a link with Healthy Schools
  • Helps towards the PSA targets.
  • Find out what the pupils want to achieve, take
note of any hobbies they have and use this
    information as their incentive.

17
Phase 2Fitness Testing in Schools
  • How can we address the problems we have regarding
the fitness and self esteem issues in our
schools. Develop a Fitness Testing programme that
gives each child a FITNESS RATING 1-5
  • Develop Fitness and self esteem fitness tests
that will help shape the PE Curriculum and
    educate students / parents.
  • Help identify students at risk obesity, health
    related problems
  • Help students to become aware of their own
    fitness ratings
  • Help develop targets for students to raise their
    own fitness levels and self-esteem.
  • Engage parents to be more aware of their child's
health and family life - style.
  • Help raise standards of performance and
attainment in P.E and other related areas of
    school life.

18
Can it work in a primary School ?
  • YES
  • The fitness testing and profiling has been
delivered and used by primary Teachers.
Individual booklets given to each child
  • Emphasis on FUN Healthy bodies.

19
Present moment old table
  • Table below
  • The tests at present have been conducted in
September, and are aimed at key stages 3 4. The
results of which are used to give the students a
Fitness rating based only on the specific tests.

20
  • We have highlighted the fact that Ofsted reports
did not use fitness testing data as a part a P.E
    Ofsted report.

21
How we can make a difference
  • By introducing a new traffic light and individual
numbering system for each test, we can use this
to identify areas of concern and strength.

22
Summary
  • The regular monitoring of fitness levels as a
    result
  • of whole school testing does keep the focus
on the importance of fitness and regular physical
activity and educational programs conducted in
    physical education to promote them.
  • Physical education can focus on educating youth
about fitness and teaching them how to become
active to promote lifetime fitness. However,
physical education by itself cannot and should
not be held accountable for the fitness status of
    the students.
  • The school, the home, and the community must all
be involved in promoting the healthy lifestyles
necessary for promoting good health and fitness.

23
  • A solution to the problem
