Healthy Schools
  • The Healthy Schools Programme has been running in
    Knowsley since 1999.
  • It is a joint initiative between the DfES and DoH

  • 34 schools are now fully accredited as National
    Healthy Schools since Sept 2005
  • The rest are working towards

What is accreditation?
  • To become fully accredited schools must meet
    national criteria in 4 key themes
  • PSHE
  • Emotional Health and Wellbeing
  • Healthy Eating
  • Physical Activity

  • Schools must be able to demonstrate that they
    have used a whole school approach
  • This means consulting with pupils, staff parents
    and carers

  • Each school should have a Healthy Schools Task
    group
  • You as school nurses should be on it!
  • If not ask why not?.... and offer your services!

Why is Healthy Schools important?
  • It contributes to national and local targets and
    strategies-
  • Teenage Pregnancy
  • DAAT
  • CYP Strategic Plan
  • Oral Health Promotion Strategy
  • Obesity Strategy

Obesity in Knowsley
  • 11 Reception children are obese (10
    nationally)
  • 24.6 overweight and obese
  • (22.8 nat)
  • 21.6 Year 6 are obese
  • (17.3 nat)
  • 35.7 overweight or obese
  • (31.1 nat)
  • (KPCT, 2006)

  • Currently over 1 million obese children in UK and
    increasing
  • 42-63 of obese school aged children also become
    obese adults

  • Increasingly sedentary lifestyles
  • Easier access to junk foods
  • Types of food eaten
  • Lack of education?

What are we doing?
  • Healthy Breakfast Clubs, Tuck Shops and Family
    Cookery courses
  • Healthy Packed lunch leaflet for parents, parent
    workshops
  • School Food Trust guidance
  • Working with schools meals providers
  • Training school staff, providing resources
  • Supporting physical activity initiatives

To Conclude
  • Remember we need a whole school approach..
  • Healthy Eating and increasing physical activity
    should be for everyone not just for the
    overweight or obese!!!
