Title: The evolution of the Information Superhighway

1
The evolution of the Information Superhighway
2
  • The internet has been described by some people
as a development in human communication that
ranks in importance with the development of the
printing press, the telephone or the television.

3
Introduction To The Internet
  • A History of the Internet
  • Canadian Internet Connections
  • Emerging Careers
  • Canadian Technological Advancements
  • Wonders of the Internet
  • Social Concerns

The Internet!!
4
Internet
The Net - is the worlds largest computer network
- the larger a network, the more information it
can offer! The Net is not one network, but a
network of networks, all exchanging information
freely.
London
Sydney
5
Wonders of the Internet
  • Online Facilities
  • Electronic Mail (email)
  • On-line Conversation
  • Information Retrieval
  • Software Distribution

6
The History of the Internet
  • ARPANET
  • (Advanced Research Projects Agency NETwork)
  • ArpaNet was a military research network which
grew out of an experiment in reliable networking
  • Linking together the US Department of Defence and
    military research contractors in 1969
  • Universities doing military-funded research

7
The Birth of the Internet
  • One goal of ARPANET was to develop a reliable
wide-area communications network that could not
    be easily disabled.
  • A decentralized network was designed, so instead
of a wheel configuration, the network looked like
    a web.
  • If one aspect of the network became disrupted by
nuclear or enemy attack, the traffic on it could
automatically be re-routed to other undamaged
    links.

8
TCP/IP
  • ARPANET introduced the idea that you could have
many different kinds of computers on one network.
  • Macs, DOS, UNIX, VMS plus many other models of
computers are able to communicate using packet
    switching
  • A standard set of rules, called TCP/IP
    (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet
    Protocol).

9
NSFnet
  • The successor to ARPANET was funded by the
National Science Foundation. During the 1980s
countries began to adopt the NSF communications
standard, to build the world-wide network we call
    the Internet
  • In 1981, only 200
  • hosts were online
  • Today there are more than 10M

10
Recent History of the Internet
  • 1991 the networks were combined.
  • The Internet is now a combination of ARPAnet,
MILnet, NASA Science Internet(NSI) and NSFnet.

11
CAnet
  • Canadas national network is called CAnet
  • Co-ordinating body for provincial and territorial
    networks.
  • Over the past decade, we have seen a migration
from public to private providers. (.com, .net)
  • U.S. companies are moving into the Canadian
    market.

12
ONet
BCnet
RISQ
NBnet
NSTN
CAnet
MBnet
NLnet
PEInet
ARnet
SASKnet

General Terms
  • IP(internet protocol) number unique number
consists of four parts separated by dots. It is
essential for linking to the net. E.g.
    165.113.245.2
  • Protocol a set of rules used to accomplish tasks
on the computer . These rules dictate common
procedures and format agreed upon by all parties.
This allows different computers to work
    together.
  • Browser a software package that allows access to
the Internet or www. E.g. IE, Mozilla, Netscape

14
General Terms Cont
  • Download transferring of data from a remote
    computer down to your computer.
  • Upload transferring of data from your computer
    up to another computer.
  • Transmission Control Protocol/Internet
Protocol(TCP/IP) a suit of protocols that works
together to interconnect different types of
    computers.

15
DNS - Domain Name System
www.tvdsb.on.ca www - computer
name .ca canadian network
16
Hypertext
  • Hypertext allows pages to be linked together
  • Hyper Text mark-up Language (HTML) is the
language used to create hypertext documents.
  • Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (Http) the protocol
used by WWW to transfer to other documents.

17
URL(Uniform Resource Locator)
  • World Wide Web has its own identification
    system, URL.
  • URL is the standard way to give an address of any
resource on the Internet. It is based on domain
names used only by WWW, which allows traveling
    between page to page.
  • http//www.tvdsb.on.ca/banting/index.htm

18
Social Concerns
  • Pornographic and racist materials
  • Censorship and freedom of speech
  • Crime and piracy
  • Accessibility and affordability of access
  • Information overload
  • (Too much information and too little quality)

19
Privacy and Protection
  • Personal safety
  • Hackers and security
  • Viruses - prevention and detection
  • Integrity of users

20
Emerging Careers
  • Future trends for careers beyond 2000
  • IT (Information Technology) is the hot industry
    of the decade
  • Interpersonal and communication skills
  • Educational path?
  • Canada is a leader of technological excellence

21
Canadian Technological Excellence
  • Alexander Graham Bell (first telephone)
  • First radio transatlantic broadcast(Marconi)
  • First newspaper wire-photo technology
  • First with digital switching technology
  • One of the first with fibre optics
  • First direct-to-home television broadcasting
  • Anik-A, first domestic satellite

22
Leaders in Software Design
  • RIM (blackberry)
  • Alias and SoftImage (animators for Jurassic Park
    and Terminator II)
  • Sheridan College (Disney production studio)
  • Development of Archie (the first search engine on
    the Internet)
  • Canadians make up 60 of the programmers at
Microsoft (most from U of Waterloo)
