Title: Developing Goals and Objectives

1
Developing Goals and Objectives
  • Guidelines for Writing Goals and
  • Attainable Behavioral Objectives

2
What are goals and objectives?
  • Federal legislation defines
  • goals broad, global statements that are long
    range (annual/semi/quarter)
  • objectives short-term, typically written in
    behavioral format
  • Goals are typically broken down into short-term
    objectives
  • Goals need to encompass one or more domains of
    human development
  • Sherrill suggests

3
Goals
  • Selecting 3 or 4 goals among the nine stated
    areas (Sherrill, 1998)
  • Positive self-concept
  • Social competence
  • Sensorimotor integration
  • Perceptual motor learning

4
Goals
  • Motor skills and patterns
  • Fitness/healthy lifestyle
  • Postures/appearance
  • Play and game competence, active leisure, and
    relaxation
  • Dance and aquatic skills
  • Sports skills/competition

5
Objectives
  • Objectives should be attainable in 3 to 5 hours
    of instruction
  • Typically, 5 to 20 minutes per learning session
    on an objective
  • Therefore, mastery of objectives takes several
    weeks of instruction/practice
  • Objectives can be written in all three domains

6
Behavioral Objectives
  • Activities must related to helping students reach
    the objectives
  • Characteristics of behavioral objectives
  • 1. Must be observable
  • 2. Must be measurable
  • 3. Criteria for success
  • Three parts to a written objective

7
Behavioral Objectives
  • 3 parts to behavioral objectives
  • 1. Condition
  • 2. One, specific observable behavior
  • 3. Criterion level for success
  • Ex. (Motor) TSWBAT demonstrate use of instep
kick in soccer by kicking the ball directly to a
partner stationed 20 feet away in a practice
    situation

8
Behavioral Objectives
  • Ex. (Cognitive) TSWBAT verbally list the four
components of fitness when asked by the teacher
  • Ex. (Affective) TSWBAT demonstrate a positive
attitude toward basketball by practicing during
    free time
  • Ex. ( ? ) TSWBAT demonstrate ability to throw

9
Terminal Objectives
  • Rather than writing out each objective in
behavioral terms, simple listing of specific
    motor, cognitive, or affective objectives
  • Ex. 1. Soccer Skills
  • a. Instep kick
  • b. Push pass
  • c. Outside foot pass
  • d. Punting
