TY RECENT RESEARCH
  • ERSI tracked student performance of Junior Cert
    class of 1996 and a report was published in 2003.
  • They compared the performance of those that sat
    the leaving in 1998 with those who took
    transition year and sat the leaving in 1999
    (4,444 students in 108 schools).
  • The study found clear benefits for those that
    took part in the programme
  • The students were twice as likely to apply for
    higher education and enter degree courses than
    those who did not do transition year

  • Students secure up to 8 more across a range of
    subjects than those who did not take the
    programme.
  • They outscored counterparts by one grade per
    subject in the Leaving Certificate.
  • 75 of students now take part in Transition Year.
  • The Central Recommendation by Doctor Eimear Smith
    of ESRI is s Transition Year should be made
    available to every school in the State.
