For k-3 includes sorts, reading practice,

2
Word soup or Witches brew
  • Supplies needed for this activity that can start
out a Witches brew, change to pilgrim soup and
continue the year as Word soup.
  • Small candies like
  • sweet-tarts that dont go rancid, or foam
    shapes
  • Black pot- Halloween decoration
  • Labels paper
  • Word list
  • Tape

3
Lets get started
  • You first need to make word lists using labels or
    paper and cut words apart.
  • Two or three words will fit on each label if you
    want to be thrifty
  • Use words that your students know or can sound
out. We used number words, color words, short
vowel words that we had introduced.
  • Be sure you add plenty of I, he, she, can, the,
see, in, to, is, on,and, etc for these are words
that all students will need to be able to find
    easily.
  • Tape or stick a label to each candy.
  • You can use both sides of candy with different
words this will give a variety of words using
less candy. This is quite time consuming, but
student can help in attaching words to candy.
  • By having students that need more support help,
they will have a head start of knowing some words
    in the brew.

4
Tips on creating your brew
  • Don t want to buy candy, use foam shapes located
in the craft section of your local store. By
designating a certain shape to nouns, verbs,
adjectives, etc. Students who need more support
will soon learn that by creating a pattern of
shapes they can create a sentence.
  • If you choose to use labels and have access to a
color printer, you can color code your nouns,
    verbs, adjectives, etc...
  • Using paper ? Designate a certain color paper
    for noun, verbs, adjectives, etc.
  • A wild card candy would be fun for students to
start adding their own words they can read and
    spell.

5
Weekly layout of activities
  • Day 1 sorts Use words to do several different
sorts tall, short, sitting letters, short
    word/long words words I know /words I dont
know open sort. Create 2 or 3 sentences as a
large group and write on large paper
  • Day 2 Read small books together. We used color
books we created with the die-cut machine. Word

from witches brew. Tape to large construction
    paper.
  • Day 3 quick sort , then let students work in
    small groups of 2 or 3 to create a 1 or 2
    sentences together.

6
Weekly activities continued
  • Day 4 open sort, then have students create a
sentence of their own. Recording and illustrate
their sentence on a page to place in their
personal readers or hang up on your show off
bulletin board for all student to read.
  • Day 5 Sing My Pets a cat
  • rhyming sort see if students can find
rhyming word matches. Have students try to
create two sentences that rhyme with the words
from their word sort and illustrate for their
personal readers or create a class book of
    rhyming sentences.

7
Day One
  • Introduce the witches brew by doing a class sort
of tall, short and dangling first letters. We
used a folded piece of construction paper for
    sorting mats.
  • Pair students up to do a letter sort together.
  • If time permits do a short /long word sort or
extend these activities over a longer period of
time to foster mastery before moving on.
  • As a large group make 2 or 3 sentences together
with candies, tape candy to chart paper, write
sentences below and practice reading them
    together several times.

Creating sentence tips
  • With your pot of words, pencils, paper your ready
to go. Give each student a hand full of
    candy-words.
  • Have each student or a pair of students create
or develop a sentence using their words.
  • If they are unable to locate a word they may go
back to the pot for seconds.
  • Have them re-read the sentence or sentences to
you to confirm they have made a sentence silly or
    not.
  • After correcting the sentence they write it down
and create a picture to match while they enjoy
one or two pieces of candy.
  • It takes several practice times for younger
grades but they soon learn to create several
    sentences at a time.
  • This becomes a favorite with them during their
    exploration time.
  • This is a great filler for those faster workers
and a low prep (after created) center activity

11
Day Two
  • Introduce small book with a simple sentence
structure. We used small books we made with die
cuts and the sentence pattern The dog is blue
each book uses only one color word. Having 2 to 3
different color books for each to read. We
created 5 copies of 3 different color books.
  • Pair up in groups of 2 or 3 to do Word sort-
    Words I know/ Words I dont know.
  • Have student work together to make 2 or 3
sentences together. Tape these sentence to a
paper and display so you can review them later in
the week and work on concept of word.
