Classification of Hazardous Materials
When handling hazardous materials in gaseous,
liquid or solid state, distinct rules regarding
behaviour and protection should be followed.
Hazardous materials are substances or
preparations with the following properties Very

General Protective Measures and Behaviour
1.Before handling hazardous materials the user
should determine the risk-group of the
substance according to the Code of Hazardous
Materials or the manufacturers notice. Known
special hazards (R-Sätze) and safety regulations
(S-Sätze) are obligatory part of this
instruction. 2.Very toxic and toxic substances
must be stored in places accessible only to
well- informed and specially instructed
personel. 3.All containers are to be labeled
with name and symbol of the substance.
Containers with cancerogenic, mutagenic or
teratogenic substances are to be labeled with
R-Sätze and S-Sätze. 4.Inhalation of vapours and
contact with the skin are to be avoided. Open
handling of substances under high vapour
pressure is permitted solely within fume
cupboards. 5.Personal protection equipment like
goggles and gloves must be used following the
safety regulations (S-Sätze) and instructions for
hazardous substances. Handling is only allowed
while wearing tough, closed and safe shoes. 6.In
laboratories with toxic, very toxic,
cancerogenic, mutagenic, teratogenic,
infectious and presumably infectious substances
eating, drinking or sniffing are not allowed.
Behaviour in Emergency
In cases of danger like fire, escape of hazardous
gas, or leaking of hazardous liquids the
following rules are a must 1.Keep calm 2.Warn
persons in danger, tell them to leave the room if
necessary. 3.Stop tests at risk, shut off gas
supply and mains, keep cool water running.
4.Inform supervisors. Call control room MHH if
necessary (Telefone 2020). 5.In the event of
accidents with hazardous substances which might
result in long-term negativ health effects or
have caused illness or skin reactions a medical
doctor must be consulted. The supervisor has
to be informed. A written report has to be sent
to the Department of Occupational Safety and
Accident Prevention.
