3Jacques Cartier
Jacques Cartier(1491-1557)was an explorer of the
St.Lawrence River to present day Montreal.
Cartiers exploration was the base of Frances
claim to Canada. Their origional intent was to
search for the Northwest passage to the orient.
Jacques Cartier was a French navigator who was
origionally recognized as the European who
discovered the St.Lawrence River.
4John Cabot
John Cabot was born in Genoa, Italy in 1450. His
father was Julio Cabot, a seaman and a merchant.
In 1461,when John Cabot was 11,his family moved
to Venice. One of Johns favourite things to do
was watch the silk and spice shops. His father
owned a spice shop and John helped out sometimes.
Julio told John stories about the lands of far of
Cathay and Cipango (China and Japan)
5Christopher Columbus
Columbus sailed from Palos de la Frontera on
August 3,1492. His flagship, the Santa Maria had
52 men aboard while his other two ships, the Nina
and Pinta each held 18 men. The expedition made a
stop at the Canary Islands and on September 6,
1492 sailed westward.
