Sweets and Packaging
  • The exam board have suggested that we look at the
    following areas
  • So its going to be in the second exam

3
Purpose Of Packaging
  • Packaging fulfils the following functions
  • containing and holding the product
  • protecting the product from damage
  • making sure small parts are not lost
  • informing the customer about the product
  • creating brand identity to promote and help sell
    the product
  • making it convenient to carry, use and store the
    product.

4
Materials used for Packaging
  • Card
  • Foam board
  • Styrene sheet
  • Corrugated plastic.
  • Styrofoam (a special high density polystyrene
    foam board)
  • Medium-density fibreboard.

5
Blister Packaging
  • Blister pack is a term for several types of
pre-formed plastic packaging used for small
    consumer goods.
  • The two primary components of a blister pack are
the cavity or pocket made from a "formable" web,
    either plastic or aluminium
  • And the backing, made from paper, carton, plastic
    or aluminium.
  • The "formed" cavity or pocket contains the
product and the backing seals the product in the
    package.

6
Vacuum Forming
  • This process uses a wooden mould or form.
  • A sheet of thermoplastic is heated, then shaped
by creating a vacuum underneath it.
  • Air pressure then forces the plastic over the
    mould.
  • Vacuum forming is used to for food and
confectionary packaging, trays, shop fittings and
    baths.
  • Suitable thermoplastics include acrylic,
    polystyrene and PVC.

7
Loose Sweets
  • Some sweets are sold individually, these tend to
have some sort of wrapping for hygiene such as
    foil or thin plastic
  • This is also used to advertise the product and
make it look appealing to the customer.

8
Wrapped Sweets
  • Sweets are wrapped to keep them fresh
  • Foil is often used because it can be resealed
    easily.
  • A paper wrapper can be put over the top of the
foil wrapper to attract customers to the product

9
Boxes of sweets
  • Some sweets come in cardboard boxes
  • These are made using nets which are cut out using
    a die cutter
  • Some have plastic elements for extra strength

10
Fancy Boxes
  • Some more expensive sweets and chocolate have
packaging which means that the individual sweets
    are separated
  • This makes them look more appealing and protects
    them from damage
  • The plastic tray is made using vacuum forming,
and then a cardboard box around it to give the
    final design.
