- Stalins first Five Year Plan of 1928 to 32 set
ambitious targets for heavy industry. Its overall
aim was to modernise the USSR making it ready for
war against the western capitalist powers such as
Nazi Germany. On the positive side, huge
increases in output of coal, iron, steel oil and
electricity were achieved. On the negative side,
consumer goods were in short supply forcing
Soviet citizens to queue for hours upon end for
commodities.
6Ways of revising Top Tips
Key message Reading through notes on its own
is a poor way of revising.
Do Something with the information!

8Principle of revision
Re-read the information
Re-visit the processed information.
Do something with it - processing
Test you know it
9The brains enemies
10Making information sticky Ten top tips for
revision
11 Cool conversions!
Convert a passage of text into A mnemonic A
spider diagram A flow-chart A graph or
pie-chart A mind-map A story-board A stick-man
cartoon
12 Get creative!
Beat boredom by unleashing your creative energy.
Read through your notes for a topic and then turn
them into something really original A rap A
song lyric Advertising slogans or jingles A board
game A card game Newspaper headlines Questions
for a quiz show
13 Question generator
One of the most effective ways to revise any
topic is by making up questions about it. -Who
wants to be a millionaire? Make up multiple
choice questions for the popular TV show -5 Ws
Who? What? Where? Why? When? Write five
questions for a topic using the 5Ws as a
prompt -Key words are the answers. Generate
questions that have key words and terms as their
answers Example
Key word Your
question Photosynthesis By what
process do plants?
14Lucky Loci
Choose a place you know very well indeed your
kitchen, for example. Now imagine placing the
things you have to remember all around your
kitchen. You could put things in cupboards, on
shelves, on work tops etc. Make the image in your
mind as striking, vivid and graphic as you can.
This will help you to remember them. I revised
the Cuban Missile Crisis using the loci method. I
put President Kennedy in the fridge. I placed his
rival, Khrushchev, in the oven. Fidel Castro, the
Cuban leader, was located in the sugar jar. I
imagined him smoking a Havana cigar! In a long
line, in the cupboard beneath the kitchen sink, I
imagined a line of deadly ICBMs (thats inter
continental ballistic missiles!) just waiting to
be launched from their silos.
15 Watch the highlights!
Get yourself a pack of highlighter pens You can
use them in a variety of ways -To highlight key
words and terms in a passage of text -To colour
code strengths (green) and weaknesses (red)
within your own knowledge and understanding of a
topic. Those areas identified as red become your
top priorities -To colour code different aspects
of a topic e.g. green for economic causes, yellow
for political causes, red for social causes
16Gimme five!
Read through your notes on a topic and then Gimme
five! Ideas Five golden rules of Five
important reasons why Five consequences of Five
key terms associated with Five key features of
17 Beat the clock!
Energise your revision sessions by working
against the clock. Get a parent or carer to act
as time-keeper One minute glossary at top speed
compile an A-Z of words and terms relating to a
topic that you have been revising Ten second
recall look at a picture or diagram for ten
seconds only and then start to recreate it on a
blank sheet of paper. When a minute has passed,
allow yourself to look at the picture again for
another ten seconds. Repeat once more and then
check your version against the original
18 Reduce it!
Notes
Reduce
your notes for a topic down to a single side of
A4 them down again to what you can fit on an A5
swot card them down again to a post-it note
containing no more than 10 key words or terms
Squash
Squeeze
19Teach 2 learn
If you really want to understand a topic put
yourself in the position of having to teach it to
someone else. This works really well!
Teach -your mum about decimals or
percentages -your gran about the water
cycle -your step-dad about Shakespeares use of
imagery in a scene from a play youve been
studying
20Twos company
You dont always have to revise alone. Sometimes
its good to revise with a friend. You can test
each other. This will help you to identify each
others strengths and weaknesses Decide in
