Title: Aligning the South African National Curriculum
1- Aligning the South African National Curriculum
- Electrical Technology

2Outcomes-based education
- is a methodology of teaching in which the desired
outcomes of the learning experience are clearly
stated to enable all learners to achieve these
outcomes - a learner is expected to demonstrate the
application of knowledge, skills, values and
attitudes learnt in the
classroom
3Principles of the curriculum
Social transformation High knowledge high
skills Integration applied competence Progressio
n Articulation portability Valuing indigenous
knowledge systems Credibility, quality
efficiency
4What is a Learning Outcome?
- A learning outcome is a statement of an intended
result of learning and teaching - It describes skills, knowledge, values and
attitudes that learners should acquire - There are 4 learning outcomes for Electrical
Technology that learners acquire progressively
over 3 years - Grades 10, 11 12
5What is an Assessment Standard?
- Assessment standards are criteria that
collectively describe what a learner should know
and be able to demonstrate at each grade - They embody the skills, knowledge, values
attitudes required to achieve the learning
outcomes
6The purpose scope of Electrical Technology
- Exposure to relevant skills, knowledge, values
attitudes - Preparation for career pathways and additional
education training opportunities - Electrical Technology affords learners the
opportunity - to carry out practical projects, experiments
- and real-life tasks using a variety of
- of processes and skills
- Refer pages 9 10 in the Electrical Technology
- curriculum statement
7Aligning the lesson on Electric Motors with the
SA learning outcomes assessment standards
- Everything you wanted to know about electric
motors but were afraid to ask - Learning outcomes, assessment standards,
content and contexts - Page 13 ?
8Aligning the lesson on Electric Motors with the
SA learning outcomes assessment standards
- Technology, society the environment
- the learner is able to demonstrate an awareness
and understanding of the interrelationship
between technology, society the environment - Gr 10 describe the interrelationship between
technology, society the environment - Gr 11 discuss and evaluate the interrelationship
between technology, society the environment - Gr 12 predict the impact of future developments
in technology on society
9Aligning the lesson on Electric Motors with the
SA learning outcomes assessment standards
- Technological process
- The learner is able to understand and apply the
technological process - identify, investigate, define and analyse
problems in a given real-life situation - assessment standards will be dependent on the
particular activity
10Aligning the lesson on Electric Motors with the
SA learning outcomes assessment standards
- Knowledge understanding
- The learner is able to demonstrate an
understanding of the concepts and principles
related to Electrical Technology - Gr 10 demonstrate an understanding of the
Occupational Health and Safety Act - describe the principle of magnetism
- describe the principles of electricity
11Aligning the lesson on Electric Motors with the
SA learning outcomes assessment standards
- Application of knowledge
- The learner is able to apply principle sand
practices related to Electrical Technology - Gr 10construct and comprehend single-phase
circuits - Gr 11 construct and apply single-phase circuits
12Competence descriptions for Electrical Technology
- report on learners level of achievement based on
Learning Outcomes and Assessment Standards that
are clustered in a holistic rubric - Pages 51 - 63
- Glossary pages 65 - 67
13Considerations for successful lessons
- Provision of resources
- Practical application
- Well-prepared lessons
- Well-managed classroom
- Clear outcomes to be achieved
in the lesson - Relevant to the learners
- Confident teachers
