- Not working on anything that is not already
sold - - 200 suppliers
- - Only maintain 48 hours of inventory
- - Quality control takes place on the assembly
line - Everything is team oriented, no employee spends
longer than 2 hours at a single project - - Utilize Kanban cards
7Suppliers
- Hire Diversified suppliers ( woman owned)
- Must meet quality standards to
- Minimal inspection of received materials
- Maintain long-term contracts with suppliers
8Products
-Pontiac Vibe -Toyota Corolla -Toyota Tacoma (
Compact pickup truck standard, extra and
double cab) - Toyota Voltz ( Exported to Japan)
9Production
NUMMI cars and trucks begin as giant rolls of
coiled steel, 97 of which come from the Midwest.
These coils weigh as much as 48,000 pounds each.
Every day NUMMI uses nearly a million pounds of
steel to manufacture its vehicles.
Sheets of metal pass through stamping presses
that can weigh up to 57,000 pounds each. These
use different dies and molds to stamp, or form,
three-dimensional parts.
In order to understand the vehicle manufacturing
process at NUMMI, we will follow a well
recognized part - a door - through the various
departments
This door started as a flat piece of metal, and
through a series of three or four pressings we
end up with the finished product. Now its off to
Body and Weld
10Production- Body and Weld
We have two large robot welding lines that use
about 100 robots to weld outer bodies together.
Heres the door again. We have more than 1,000
multi-welders throughout NUMMI. These are smaller
welding machines. Team members put the metal
parts into place, hit a switch, and the machine
does the welding. Less than 10 percent of welding
is done manually.
Once completed, the door is attached to the
vehicle, goes through a thorough inspection, and
then its on to Paint.
11Production -Paint
Inspection is the key in the Paint department.
Vehicles are repeatedly checked during all five
phases
- Phosphate bath anticorrosion treatment/scoring
of the body and a positive-charged immersion bath
that help the metal body and paint to bond - Sealer/anti-chip soundproofing, waterproofing
and an application in wheel wells to prevent
chipping from rocks - Primer first spray stage
- Top coat/clear coat color and top coat spray
- Assembly scheduling vehicle bodies travel to
the main plant, where finishing touches are
applied and they await delivery to the assembly
line.
12Production- Plastics
Plastics supplies the assembly lines with
bumpers, instrument panels and numerous small
parts. Small plastic pellets are melted then
inserted into molds in a process called injection
molding. Using cooling lines, the plastic
solidifies to make the finished product.
Here, the mold is separated, and the instrument
panel is gently removed (its easily scratched at
this time) and sent to Paint.
We also produce bumpers for our cars.
13Production- Assembly
After Paint, the first step in Assembly is to
detach the doors, making it easier for team
members to work on the vehicle as it travels down
the line. The door is finished in another area of
the plant. Toward the end of the line, our door
meets up with the body and is reattached.
Other steps in the Assembly process include
installation of parts such asenginestires
14Production- Quality Control
Quality isnt something we only check for at the
end of the process it is built into NUMMI cars
and trucks at each stage. Our Quality Control and
Quality Assurance departments conduct
inspections, tests and audits to ensure customer
satisfaction. They also work with all areas of
the plant to address and prevent problems and to
increase awareness of the importance of
maintaining quality in each work station. The
end result is a quality vehicle that finds its
way to a General Motors or Toyota dealer and,
eventually, the customer.
15Community Involvement
- As the only automobile manufacturing plant in
California and a major employer in the Bay Area,
NUMMI and its team members are committed to
serving the communities in which we live and work - NUMMIs involvement includes
