CEC PRESENTATION - Topics
  • An indirect evaporative pre cooling kit for air
cooled condensers on residential, small business
    agriculture, and public buildings
  • Lessons learned from existing systems
  • Status of development and marketing efforts
  • Developing a state wide strategy for
    commercialization
  • CECs potential involvement

3
IntroductionIn California,
  • The cause of power shortages during the summer
results from consumer demand, and thus, from
continuous operation of air cooled condensers
    during peak temperature periods.
  • Refrigerant based air cooled A/C systems will
  • continue to be the predominate method of
cooling in the residential and small business
market for the next 20 years.

4
Why this cause exists with air cooled refrigerant
A/C systems
  • Efficiency drops rapidly as temperatures rise
  • Improperly sized condensers
  • Improperly charged systems
  • Condensers located in hot micro climates
  • 4-6 pm start ups
  • Low SEER systems still in market
  • Minimal energy conservation and maintenance
    efforts by customers

5
The solution according to I.E.T.
  • If we cant eliminate them improve them
  • The most effective way to reduce wattage
consumption in an air cooled condenser, and to
normalize conditions affecting performance, is to
    provide the condenser optimum operating
conditions by creating a cool, dry micro climate
    around the condenser coils,
  • or, stated another way,
  • Install a CorCool indirect evaporative pre
cooler kit around the A/C unit. Market it as
    CorCoolCCS

6
Variables Pre cooler impactduring peak
temperature periods
  • A/C unit sizing
  • SEER rating
  • A/C unit age
  • A/C unit location
  • Improper charging
  • Climate zone
  • Micro climates
  • Air flow rates
  • Solar thermal gain
  • Duct sizing leakage
  • Latent heat
  • Space attic fans
  • Air infiltration
  • Occupancy
  • Filter cleanliness
  • Thermostat setting

7
What is CorCool
  • CorCool is a patented indirect evaporative heat
exchanger using commercially available cut sheet
stock in varying thickness and plate sizes to
    create optimum HT configurations.
  • CorCool can be applied to air and/or water
cooling in a very compact system
  • Flow rates to 50,000 cfm are possible
  • Other patents are pending
  • Long lasting (gt15 Years)

8
Cut drawing of CorCool
9
How CorCool IHX differs as it relates to A/C pre
coolers
  • Direct adiabatic cooling vs. indirects
  • Damage to condenser from mineral carryover
  • Cellulose pad replacement required
  • Possible freezing of indoor cooling coil
  • CorCool vs. other IHXs
  • Highest dry surface area to wet surface area(21)
  • Highest surface area per ft³ of HX core
  • Least resistance to heat transfer

10
So then, what is CorCoolCCS
  • It is a system of creating a cool, dry micro
climate around any air cooled condenser
  • Uses a field proven, effective indirect HX
  • It is an auxiliary plug-in appliance kit
  • It can be installed by anyone qualified in simple
    electrical and plumbing methods
  • It can be installed in multiple configurations
  • It is made entirely of durable thermoplastics

11
CorCoolCCS Drawing
12
CorCoolCCS Layout
13
CorCoolCCS applications
  • Split A/C or heat pump condensing systems
  • Packaged roof top units
  • Economizer cycle air cooling
  • Refrigeration air cooled condensers
  • Make up air tempering for kitchens and other
    ventilation applications
  • Night sky water cooling for hydronics and thermal
    mass cooling

14
What CorCoolCCS does
  • Maintains compressor suction temperatures near
40 F regardless of ambient conditions or
    correctness of charge
  • Reduces condenser wattage consumption by up to
    60 in some climate zones
  • Extends life of condenser
  • Keeps condenser coils cleaner
  • Reduces condenser noise
  • Reduces condenser wattage when not in use

15
What CorCoolCCS doesnt do
  • Void any warranties on A/C system
  • Increase amp draw on existing wire
  • Corrode condenser fins
  • Impede air flow to condenser coils
  • Reduce capacity of A/C system
  • Prevent A/C system from operating
  • Cause indoor coil freezing

16
Increase SEER vs CorCoolCCS
  • Estimated monthly reduction in kwh.
  • 10 to 13 SEER 240 kwh
  • 13 to 18 SEER 165 kwh
  • Estimated monthly reduction in kwh using
    CorCoolCCS on existing.
  • 10 SEER system 540 kwh
  • 13 SEER system 450 kwh
  • Note Based on 105 F ambient 4 ton unit
  • Note Based on 15 less run mins per hr over 12
    hrs

17
Most significant wattage reduction methods (BOOM)
  • Replace single pane windows - 8,000 - 10 year
    ROI
  • Replace low SEER A/C with 13 SEER - 4,200 7
    year ROI
  • Installation of an 2 stage evaporative cooler
    1,500-3,500 3 year ROI
  • Install CorCoolCCS - 1,500 1 to 2 year ROI
    (Rebates tbd should be gt600)

18
Local code/UL requirements
  • San Diego Co. chief inspectors reviewed
    CorCoolCCS for installation requirements
  • Separate 10 amp 3R rated fuse box tapped from
existing 30 amp fuse box (220v) at wire inlet
  • Rain protected single gang box plug receptacle
  • All UL approved/recognized components
  • Follows National Electric Code standards
  • No overall system UL requirements because it is a
    outdoor plug-in auxiliary appliance kit

19
CorCoolCCS controls
  • Dependent
  • Signal from thermostat cooling demand signal
through 220v relay with 24v coil (Mechanical
    contractor only)
  • Independent
  • Outdoor thermostat or timer (Mechanical
    contractor, owner, or handyman installed)

20
CorCoolCCS components
  • CorCool indirect heat exchanger with five years
    of successful field operation
  • Condenser fan motor has a service factor of 1.00
    and sealed ball bearings
  • Proven evaporative cooler water pump
  • Serviceable water nozzles
