Title: The Brain

The Brain

Frontal Lobe
  • The frontal lobes are considered our emotional
control center and home to our personality. The
frontal lobes are involved in motor function,
    problem solving, memory, language, judgement,
    impulse control, and social behavior.

3
Occipital Lobe
  • The occipital lobes are the center of our visual
perception system. They are located in the back
of your head, towards the base of your head.

4
Parietal Lobe
  • The parietal lobes can be divided into two
functional regions. One involves sensation and
perception. The other is concerned with sensory
input. The first function integrates sensory
information to form a single function that
constructs perception. The second is a spatial
system coordinate to represent the world around
    us.

Temporal Lobe
  • Language in the brain is processed in the
temporal lobes. These are on the sides of your
brain, next to you temples. Different areas in
the temporal lobe deal with different aspects of
    language.

Axon
  • A long fiber of a nerve cell (a neuron) that acts
somewhat like a fiber-optic cable carrying
    outgoing (efferent) messages.
  • The neuron sends electrical impulses from its
cell body through the axon to target cells. Each
nerve cell has one axon. An axon can be over 20
cm (a foot) in length, which for the human body
    is remarkably long.

Dendrite
  • Dendrite development is an important and unsolved
problem in neuroscience. The nervous system is
composed of a vast number of neurons. Neurons
    have specialized projections called dendrites

Cell Body
  • The largest part of a cell, the cell body holds
all of the general parts of a cell as well as the
nucleus, which is the control center. The nucleus
contains the cell's genetic material. The cell
body also contains many other unique structures
responsible for making energy and getting rid of
cellular wastes the enlarged portion of a neuron.

Synapse
  • Neurons have specialized projections called
dendrites and axons. Dendrites bring information
to the cell body and axons take information away
from the cell body. Information from one neuron
flows to another neuron across a synapse. The
synapse contains a small gap separating neurons.

Thalamus
  • Thalamus , mass of nerve cells centrally located
in the brain just below the cerebrum and
resembling a large egg in size and shape. The
thalamus is a routing station for all incoming
sensory impulses except those of smell,
transmitting them to higher (cerebral) nerve
    centers.

13
Hypothalamus
  • The tiny hypothalamus serves as the Health
Maintenance Organization of the body, regulating
its homeostasis, or stable state of equilibrium.
    The hypothalamus also generates behaviors
involved in eating, drinking, general arousal,
    rage, aggression, embarrassment, escape from
danger, pleasure and copulation. It does an
amazing number of housekeeping chores for such a
    small piece of tissue.

Pituitary
  • The pituitary is a small, pea-sized gland located
at the base of the brain that functions as "The
Master Gland." From its lofty position above the
rest of the body. It sends messages to lots of
    areas.

15
Amygdola
  • There is a complicated series of events in the
nervous system that leads to the physical
sensations and behaviors of fear. The amygdala is
both large and just beneath the surface.
