  • Roger Williams
  • an extreme separatist two controversial views
  • 1. declared that English settlers had no
    rightful claim to the land unless they purchased
    it from Native Americas.
  • 2. declared that the government officials had no
    business punishing settlers for religious
    beliefs.
  • was ordered to be arrested, but Williams fled
    and set up a new colony, Providence.

  • Anne Hutchinson
  • She taught that the Holy Spirit illumines the
    heart of every true believer meaning neither
    church nor ministers were needed to interpret the
    Bible for them.
  • Anne was banished from the colony in 1638.went
    to Rhode Island and eventually settled in New
    Netherland( New York) where Dutch practiced
    religious toleration.

Land Disputes
  • Pequot War- Connecticut, 1637.
  • colonists formed alliance with enemy tribe of
    the Pequots and nearly destroyed the entire
    nation.
  • King Philips War- 1675
  • Wampanoag (Chief Matacom) tribe attacked and
    burned settlements throughout New England. His
    death in the battles ended Native American power
    in southeastern New England.

  • Henry Hudson- 1609. Hudson River (NY)
  • I. 1621. Dutch Found New Netherland
  • 1625. New Amsterdam (now New York City) became
    fur trade capital.
  • Colony was diverse- Germans, French,
    Scandinavians, Africans (free and enslaved)
  • II. Dutch were driven out by EnglishKing Charles
    brother James, took over the land..renamed it New
    York and gave land to his friends, naming the
    territory New Jersey.

  • Guaranteed every adult male settler 50 acres of
    land and the right to vote.
  • System of representative assembly (govt) and
    freedom of religion.
