- Approved 2005 Bond Referendum Project
- Construction of a new 911 Center
- Located on the south side of the Administration
Building - New Communications System
- Replaces an aging and outdated communications
system (1991) - Enhances radio system coverage (towers from 4 to
15) - Enhances our ability to communicate with other
localities and agencies - Enhances system security and system reliability

- Provide public safety personnel with a
communications system that provides the required
level of coverage needed to communicate within
schools, commercial grade buildings and
residential structures - Construct towers in specified locations and at
specified heights to provide 95 in-building
on-the-hip portable radio coverage

- Communications System Design
- Through the use of a Request for Proposal
procurement process, Motorola was selected to
provide - A 12-channel System to be shared by all public
safety and public service departments and other
County agencies, including schools, school buses,
Ashland Town Police, and Randolph Macon College - 15-tower and transmitter sites to meet the wide
area coverage requirements - 3 current County radio towers
- 3 commercial towers
- 9 new towers
- A public safety grade system which incorporate
700/800 MHz spectrum and digital technology - A digital point-to-point loop microwave subsystem
to link sites together

- Tower Site Selection Criteria
- Located towers in places that will work with
other towers to create a system that provides 95
Countywide in-building on-the-hip portable radio
coverage - Use of existing towers
- Use of County owned property
- Lease or purchase of land as necessary

Tower compounds and towers are being built in
wooded areas with natural screening and designed
to accommodate co-locations of cellular providers
to reduce the overall number of towers needed in
the County and for revenue to help fund the
ongoing cost of the system.
