Title: Bigfoot

1
Bigfoot Could We Support It?
  • For years there has been an ongoing debate as to
whether or not Bigfoot exists. A majority of the
American population completely dismiss the idea
of such a creature, but there are a few
environmental factors that prevent its existence
from being discounted. The Temperate Forest, an
area along the Pacific Northwest, can provide the
proper food supply to meet Bigfoots supposed
caloric requirements, enough land for a large
creature to inhabit, and the correct climate for
    survival.

2
What is Bigfoot?
  • Bigfoot, also referred to as Sasquatch in
Canada, is a human-ape like cryptid. Cryptids are
creatures whose existence have not been
scientifically proven, but have been identified
by many people. Bigfoot has been sighted in
numerous states across the country, but the
Pacific Northwest has the most with a combined
total of 1180 reports coming from three states
Oregon, California, and Washington. It is often
reported as furry and bipedal, standing between 6
ft. 7 in 9 ft. 10 in tall. People have also
estimated that the weight of a creature this tall
    is over 500 lb.

3
Where is Bigfoot Hiding?
As stated by The Guardian, the alleged location
of Bigfoot is in the temperate rainforests in the
pacific northwest. The pacific temperate
rainforest is one of the biggest uninhabited
areas in the U.S. with more than a million acres
stretching from California to Canada (Wilson). In
addition, this forest is home to some of the
largest trees in the U.S., which are covered with
Epiphytes, plant grown on plants, making the
forest extremely dense and jungle-like (National
Parks Service). According to Current Science,
the minimum amount of agricultural land
necessary for sustainable food security, with a
diversified diet similar to those of North
America and Western Europe (hence including
meat), is 0.5 of a hectare per person (Myers).
0.5 of a hectare is approximately 1.23553 of an
acre, which is the equivalent of a football field
(Washington Grown). Although bigfoot is taller
than the average human, the amount of space
needed to survive shouldnt be much bigger than
this. Therefore, an area this vast and
unoccupied, by humans, could be the perfect place
to house a small population of bigfeet without
being detected.
4
What Will Bigfoot Eat?
According to many reports Bigfoots body
reportedly favors the average male body, yet
should weigh over 500 pounds. Therefore, its
safe to assume it shares the internal structure
of a human, but has the diet of a large mammal,
such as a grizzly bear. The grizzly bear is the
largest surviving mammal to inhabit the Pacific
Northwest (Parker). Their caloric intake ranges
up to 58,000 calories a day, which is met by
consuming deer, elk, salmon, nuts, fruit and
insects (Defenders of Wildlife). According to
the Basal Metabolic Rate and the Harris Benedict
formulas, a human between 6 ft. 7 in 9 ft. 10
in tall and around 500 lb. should have a caloric
intake of 5,000 to 6,000 a day (Harris). If the
Temperate Rainforests can provide the resources
to sustain large populations of bears, then it is
likely that it can support a population of
Bigfeet, whose needs are only a fraction of
Grizzly bears.
5
Are You Hot, Bigfoot?
Bigfoot is described to be quite hairy from head
to toe, similar to a gorilla. One could assume
that the temperatures along the Pacific Northwest
would be too hot for a hairy being, but in fact
the temperature is often cool and the standard
habitat for these animals. Gorillas are often
found inhabiting tropical forests or environments
comparable to them, with average temperatures of
73 Degrees Fahrenheit (Entertainment). Due to
constant rainfall, the annual average temperature
in the Pacific Temperate Forest is above 38
degrees Fahrenheit and the hottest is 69 degrees
Fahrenheit (Marietta College). Therefore, its
possible for Bigfoot to live comfortably in this
environment.
6
Could Bigfoot Exist in North America?
Unfortunately, due to years of false facts and
stories, no amount of logical evidence in favor
of Bigfoot will convince people of its existence.
Furthermore, unless a body emerges or someone
captures Bigfoot, we may never know if Bigfoot
exists among us. Nevertheless, by comparing
existing animals and analyzing the U.S.s
ecosystem, we do know that the northern
environment of the U.S. could support Bigfeet.
