• Fabrication of a partially suspended carbon
  nanotube structure
• Use of an AFM tip as an external force on the
  center of the tube
• Monitor force vs cantilever deflection
• Immediate conductance response
• Up to 100 times change in conductance (not
  expected)
• Theoretical studies show sp2 to sp3 transition
  causing localization in the center of the tube
• Reversibility When the force is removed the
  initial conditions recover
