another since the 1900s in South Africa - Membership is open to South African based
companies (not individuals) - via regional chambers

high end folded carton and flexible packaging. - Web OffsetCaters for longer runs and has the
advantage of having online folders. - DigitalMaking inroads into conventional print
with print on demand particularly for books and
manuals and short run work - GravureRelatively expensive used primarily for
long run magazines and carton work.

Internationally most printers are small to medium
businesses 70 to 75 of printers in South
Africa employ less than 50 people

12- Imprint Act 43/1993
- The Printing Industries Federation of South
Africa administers and maintains the imprint
register in terms of the act. - The Act was passed by the Department of Home
Affairs to regulate printed matter including
newspapers which previously fell under an older
1971 act. - Manufacturing printers (not brokers, advertising
agencies or publishers) must have their full
name and address or a registered abbreviated
imprint on all printed matter subject to
exemptions. - "printed matter" is defined in the act as any
picture or any mark conveying any meaning which
has been affixed on any material, or has been
produced by impressing or transferring other
material thereon. - The act allows for the Minister of Home Affairs
to exempt by notice in the Government Gazette
any type of printed matter and to make
regulations regarding the procedure for the
registration of imprints. - No person can distribute foreign printed matter
in the Republic unless the country of origin is
affixed.
13Imprint Act 43/1993Exemptions
- To date only the following printed matter is
exempted - Commercial Printed Matter
- (1) Labels, stamps and seals-smaller than 25 cm2.
- (2) Business cards-11 cm x 8 cm or smaller.
- (3) Letterheads-printed, embossed or foiled.
- (4) Envelopes.
- (5) Bags-smaller than 17 cm x 11 cm in size.
- (6) Tape-sealing machine strips.
- (7) Bank notes printed by the South African Bank
Note Printing Company (Pty) Ltd. - (8) Fruit wrappers.
- (9) All bills, Acts, reports, documents,
memoranda or minutes of Parliament or any
Parliamentary committee that are printed by order
of Parliament or any Parliamentary committee or
the State President or the Speaker of the House. - (10) All circulars and work printed on a
duplicating machine and published by and in the
name of any state department or the Republic of
South Africa. - Personal, professional and private stationery
- (1) Notepaper-printed, embossed or foiled.
- (2) Envelopes.
- (3) Visiting Cards.
14Imprint Act 43/1993Fees
- Registration of an Imprint R50.00 exclusive of
VAT. - Change of Address Details R25.00 exclusive of
VAT. - Applications for details of an imprint R10.00
exclusive of VAT. - Applications for registration or details of an
imprint are addressed to PIFSA - Companies are obliged in terms of the act to
update their records within 14 days of changes
being made. - Fees have remained at the above prices since 1993
when the act came into operation.
15Cross Media Training Centre
- The Cross Media Training Centre was established
PIFSA. It is the only college of its kind in the
Southern Hemisphere. - The Centre trains 200 students annually across a
range of 4 trades and has a 75 job placement
rate. - The courses fall into two broad categories
Desktop Publishing for the more creative or
artistic minds and Print Technology for the
technically minded.
