- Social Science
3Structure and Framework of Moon Unit
- Case-Based students will learn about space
travel through the eyes of four characters - Each 4-person group must make decision about
going to the moon using consensus - 6 week time period
- Each student will have a Palm
4Use of Palm
- Use during consensus decision making process
- Data collection software???
- Tables will be beamed to students with special
needs gifted students can design tables forms
for their group - Questions for experts (in which program?) (link
to a sample doc)

6WEEK 1 Background Consensus Decision-Making
- Learn about commercial space flight Space Future
- Space Tourism - Why make a decision using consensus instead of
voting? - Who else uses it?
- Use of Palm for journal and consensus support
- Friday video conference with members of the
Ravenswood Collective and business leaders who
use consensus
7WEEK 3 TheFinancier
- His name is Mr. Greedy.

experience and are the cheapest way to enhance
childrens learning.
8- How much does it cost to train each person?
- We will research the web.
- M2K4 Roaming the Red Planet
- This website contains a ton of information and
allows students to find the answer in multiple
ways. - How much does the food for the trip cost?
- They will be given a list of items and their

fuel costs. Then, they will use the internet to
research how much fuel is needed for a trip to
the moon. - How much does a space shuttle cost?
- Students will search the NASA website to find out
how much they spend on the building of space
shuttles. - How many crew members need to be present?
- Students will have a video conference with
someone from the Chicago Space Museum and discuss
how many people are usually on voyages. - Students will then have an open discussion about
the week with the expert.
11WEEK x Elaine the Environmentalist
- Thinks about the short-term and long-term effects
of her actions - Owns an electric hybrid car but bikes around town
- Recycles and composts
- Enjoys hiking and backpacking
12Elaines Questions . . .
- Monday How much oil will we use?
- (compare oil used in one space flight to oil
used by each persons family in one
day/month/year use Excel?) - Tuesday What are some of the negative
environmental impacts of using oil?
13More Questions from Elaine . . .
- Wednesday What about space junk?
- Thursday What are some environmental benefits
of space travel? Student Data GDS Remote
Sensing -
- Friday What do other environmentalists think
about space travel? - ?Video Conference with a Sierra Club
representative and an environmental scientist
14Week 5
15How many jobs will going to the moon create?
- Engage in internet research for how many people
have to work to make a trip into space - Ask NASA Expert about this on Friday
16Who will be paid for these trips to the moon?
- Talk about who students think should get the
money that people pay to go to the moon - Talk about why those people should get some of
the money - Ask about NASA and how much they will get if it
is not already mentioned
17Who will govern this form of travel?
- First discuss how FAA controls air travel, and
someone will need to control space travel - Talk about US Space Command, what they do, and
what would have to change for them to control
tourist trips to the moon
How will they control it?
- Talk about current ways of controlling space
travel, and what would likely happen if tourist
moon travel was added - Have a student discussion within groups about
what rules they think would be needed for tourist
moon travel - Ask NASA expert about current ways of controlling
space travel on Friday
18What will be the requirements (height, weight,
etc.) of people going to the moon?
- Discuss what students think the requirements
should be - Look at to see NASA requirements
http//spaceflight.nasa.gov/shuttle/reference/fact
sheets/asseltrn.html - Talk about NASA requirements and how they might
change for tourists
19What will people gain by going to the moon?
20Video Conferencing with NASA Expert
21WEEK 6 Deciding on a Plan
- Each student will play a role and represent the
views of his or her character - Each group will need to come to a consensus
whether or not to go to the moon - Design website to show off data used to support
decision - Assessment activities on Friday
22Student Assessment
- Publication of website (link to sample website)
- Give press conference with experts and parents
via video conference
