What is Global Warming?

• The increase in the temperature on earth
• Is created by more energy arriving than leaving
• The warming trend of about 1 degree Fahrenheit
  has been recorded since the late 19th century

The Causes of Global Warming

• Carbon Dioxide
• Burning of fossil fuels wood
• Chlorofluorocarbons
• Aerosol sprays, refrigeration air conditioning
• Methane
• Vegetation Burning leakage of pipelines
• Nitrous oxide
• Chemical fertilizers in modern agriculture

The Effects of Global Warming

• Global warming is heating the Artic ice
• Polar bears are unlikely to survive
• Climate models predict that by 2050 half the
  volume of the Artic Sea will be gone
  
• The melting of terrestrial glaciers will push sea
  levels up between 10 and 90 centimeters
  
• Coastal zones and small islands are extremely
  vulnerable to the rise in sea levels!

• A chain of 1,192 small islands arranged in
  clusters in the Indian Ocean
  
• The highest elevation is 6 ft above sea level
• Rising oceans will some day submerge the
  Maldives!

Tourism in the Maldives

• Tourism is vital to the Maldives
• The waters contain three-quarters of the worlds
  reef-fish species and have become world famous
  for snorkeling

Coral Reef Bleaching

• Widespread coral reef bleaching in 1998 occurred
  due to temporary higher water temperatures
  associated with El Nino.
  
• The reefs provide shoreline protection by
  reducing storm damage and flooding by intense
  waves, as well as supporting the shorelines from
  coastal erosion.

• Rising seas would impact the coastal freshwater
  supplies.
  
• The peoples need for drinking, washing, and the
  efficiency of the local sewer systems would be
  interrupted.
  
• As a result, the possibility of widespread
  tropical communicable diseases results from
  inadequate drinking water.
  
• The health of the people would generate the need
  of the Maldivians to leave their small island
  communities.

• Human health will have wide-ranging consequences
  as a result of climate change.
  
• Rising sea temperatures sea levels impact all
  aspects of life
  
• These islanders have everything to lose by the
  report that the Artic is warming at an accurate
  rate and will possibly rise three feet by 2100.

How ironical it is for the country that does not
contribute to global warming caused by human use
of fossil fuel, could bear the greatest of global
warming.
