1Health Information Systems Programme (HISP)
Current Status and Future Directions
2HISP - Global
- A global Research and Development network around
health information systems in developing
countries. - Building synergies between informatics and public
health. - Supporting health reforms eg, HISP national
standard in South Africa. (see www.hisp.org) - Research 15 Phd students doing thesis within
HISP framework registered at the University of
Oslo. - Education 25 students doing Masters studies
within HISP framework. - Enabling global benchmarks, such as open source
platform, data standards etc. - Enabling south-south-north collaborative networks
3Funding Sources
- Global network supported by Norwegian Aid,
Norwegian research council, EU, Health Metrics
Network. - Locally, in respective countries, funding from
various sources like national health ministries,
USAID, Dutch Aid, national governments etc. - PhD and Masters students funded through Norwegian
government scholarship program. - Total funding globally to the extent of over 1
Million Euros per year. - In Ethiopia, Approx 200,000 USD contributed since
2003 by EU and Norwegian Goverment (60 for
implementation and 40 for students scholarship -
approx)

- Capacity building
- System development, implementation
- Systems evaluation
- International networking
10Data standardization
- Standardization efforts started in Addis data
sets and data collection instruments - Addis standards taken as point of departure for
creation of similar standards in other regions - Intensive participatory processes employed
- A longer process ahead with the involvement of
FMOH
11Capacity Building
- Masters courses currently 2 health staff doing
Public Health studies in Maputo, funded by NORAD - Two health bureau staff supported to attend
intensive HMIS course in Tanzania - Curently two courses (HIS and GIS for health)
being conducted in AAU. - Proposal being developed for establishng Masters
and doctoral programs in HIS at AAU. - Around 10 training sessions of 1-2 weeks period
held on DHIS software, computer basics, and using
information for action - Seeking to make HMIS courses as part of
curriculum in diploma programs of health colleges
in regions where we are working
