Title: The Sabbath Day
1The Sabbath Day
- Does God require Christians to observe the
Sabbath day?
2Introduction
- Many Jews today, according to their traditions,
keep the Sabbath, worshipping and resting on the
seventh day of the week, Saturday - Even some so-called Christian groups such as
Seventh-day Adventists also claim to observe the
Sabbath today as Gods required day of worship
3Introduction
- They insist all Christians must observe the
Sabbath, seventh day of rest, today in order to
please God - Why do they believe this teaching?
- Why do we reject their teaching and worship on
Sunday, the first day of the week? - May we all humbly and reverently search the
Scriptures together
4No Evidence Of Anyone Keeping The Sabbath Before
God Spoke To Israel
- Common misleading teaching is the Sabbath, rest
on the 7th day of week, was universally
commanded by God from the beginning - Truth Moses speaks of what God did after 6 days
of Creation, He rested on 7th day - Nothing revealed about what humanity should do to
observe the Sabbath
5No Evidence Of Anyone Keeping The Sabbath Before
God Spoke To Israel
- Nothing revealed about penalties for not
observing Sabbath - First mention of God commanding humanity
regarding Sabbath was to Israel after the exodus - No evidence that anyone before Exodus 16 ever
observed the Sabbath in any way
6After Creation, God rests On The Seventh Day
- Gen 21 Thus the heavens and the earth were
completed, and all their hosts. - Gen 22 By the seventh day God completed His
work which He had done, and He rested on the
seventh day from all His work which He had done. - Gen 23 Then God blessed the seventh day and
sanctified it, because in it He rested from all
His work which God had created and made.
7God First Gave Sabbath Commandment To Israel
- Exo 1622 Now on the sixth day they gathered
twice as much bread, two omers for each one. When
all the leaders of the congregation came and told
Moses, - Exo 1623 then he said to them, "This is what
the LORD meant Tomorrow is a sabbath observance,
a holy sabbath to the LORD. Bake what you will
bake and boil what you will boil, and all that is
left over put aside to be kept until morning."

carefully. - Deu 52 "The LORD our God made a covenant with
us at Horeb. - Deu 53 "The LORD did not make this covenant
with our fathers, but with us, with all those of
us alive here today.

who stays with you, so that your male servant and
your female servant may rest as well as you.

slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God
brought you out of there by a mighty hand and by
an outstretched arm therefore the LORD your God
commanded you to observe the sabbath day.
20Jesus Kept The Sabbath Because He Lived Under The
Law Of Moses
- Many will say we should keep the Sabbath today as
Jesus did - Jesus kept not only the Sabbath but all the Law
of Moses without sin - He also commanded others to keep the Law of Moses
- But, His apostles nowhere command Christians to
keep the Sabbath or the Law of Moses
21Jesus Lived Under The Law of Moses
- Gal 44 But when the fullness of the time came,
God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born
under the Law, - Gal 45 so that He might redeem those who were
under the Law, that we might receive the adoption
as sons.
22Jesus Perfectly Kept The Law of Moses Including
The Sabbath
- 1Pe 222 WHO COMMITTED NO SIN, NOR WAS ANY
DECEIT FOUND IN HIS MOUTH - Heb 415 For we do not have a high priest who
cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One
who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet
without sin.
23While On Earth, Jesus Commanded Other Jews To
Keep The Law of Moses
- Mar 141 Moved with compassion, Jesus stretched
out His hand and touched him, and said to him,
"I am willing be cleansed." - Mar 142 Immediately the leprosy left him and he
was cleansed.
24While On Earth, Jesus Commanded Other Jews To
Keep The Law of Moses
- Mar 143 And He sternly warned him and
immediately sent him away, - Mar 144 and He said to him, "See that you say
nothing to anyone but go, show yourself to the
priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses
commanded, as a testimony to them."
25The Sabbath Day
- No evidence of anyone keeping the Sabbath before
God spoke to Israel - The Sabbath, part of the Law of Moses, old
covenant, given only to Israel - Jesus kept the Sabbath because He lived under the
Law of Moses - Jesus ended the Law of Moses including the
Sabbath and established His new covenant
26Jesus Ended The Law Of Moses Including The
Sabbath And Established His New Covenant
- In His death, after living a sinless life on
earth, Jesus fulfilled and ended the old covenant - In His blood, perfect sacrifice, He established
the new covenant by which both Jews and Gentiles
must be saved - The old covenant including the Sabbath was
intended to be temporary, replaced by the gospel
27In Jesus Death, He Ended Old Covenant and
Established New Covenant
- Col 213 When you were dead in your
transgressions and the uncircumcision of your
flesh, He made you alive together with Him,
having forgiven us all our transgressions, - Col 214 having canceled out the certificate of
debt consisting of decrees against us, which was
hostile to us and He has taken it out of the
way, having nailed it to the cross.
28In Jesus Death, He Ended Old Covenant and
Established New Covenant
- Col 215 When He had disarmed the rulers and
authorities, He made a public display of them,
having triumphed over them through Him. - Col 216 Therefore no one is to act as your
judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to
a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day--
29In Jesus Death, He Ended Old Covenant and
Established New Covenant
- Col 217 things which are a mere shadow of what
is to come but the substance belongs to Christ.
30In Jesus Death, He Ended Old Covenant and
Established New Covenant
- Rom 74 Therefore, my brethren, you also were
made to die to the Law through the body of
Christ, so that you might be joined to another,
to Him who was raised from the dead, in order
that we might bear fruit for God. - Rom 75 For while we were in the flesh, the
sinful passions, which were aroused by the Law,
were at work in the members of our body to bear
fruit for death.
31In Jesus Death, He Ended Old Covenant and
Established New Covenant
- Rom 76 But now we have been released from the
Law, having died to that by which we were bound,
so that we serve in newness of the Spirit and not
in oldness of the letter.
32In Jesus Death, He Ended Old Covenant and
Established New Covenant
- Eph 213 But now in Christ Jesus you who
formerly were far off have been brought near by
the blood of Christ. - Eph 214 For He Himself is our peace, who made
both groups into one and broke down the barrier
of the dividing wall,
33In Jesus Death, He Ended Old Covenant and
Established New Covenant
- Eph 215 by abolishing in His flesh the enmity,
which is the Law of commandments contained in
ordinances, so that in Himself He might make the
two into one new man, thus establishing peace, - Eph 216 and might reconcile them both in one
body to God through the cross, by it having put
to death the enmity.
34In Jesus Death, He Ended Old Covenant and
Established New Covenant
- Heb 86 But now He has obtained a more excellent
ministry, by as much as He is also the mediator
of a better covenant, which has been enacted on
better promises. - Heb 87 For if that first covenant had been
faultless, there would have been no occasion
sought for a second.
35In Jesus Death, He Ended Old Covenant and
Established New Covenant
- Heb 88 For finding fault with them, He says,
"BEHOLD, DAYS ARE COMING, SAYS THE LORD, WHEN I
WILL EFFECT A NEW COVENANT WITH THE HOUSE OF
ISRAEL AND WITH THE HOUSE OF JUDAH
36In Jesus Death, He Ended Old Covenant and
Established New Covenant
- Heb 89 NOT LIKE THE COVENANT WHICH I MADE WITH
THEIR FATHERS ON THE DAY WHEN I TOOK THEM BY THE
HAND TO LEAD THEM OUT OF THE LAND OF EGYPT FOR
THEY DID NOT CONTINUE IN MY COVENANT, AND I DID
NOT CARE FOR THEM, SAYS THE LORD.
37In Jesus Death, He Ended Old Covenant and
Established New Covenant
- Heb 813 When He said, "A new covenant," He has
made the first obsolete. But whatever is becoming
obsolete and growing old is ready to disappear.
38Sabbath, Circumcision, Levitical Priesthood and
Law of Moses All Temporary
- Exo 3116 'So the sons of Israel shall observe
the sabbath, to celebrate the sabbath throughout
their generations as a perpetual covenant.' - Gen 179 God said further to Abraham, "Now as
for you, you shall keep My covenant, you and your
descendants after you throughout their
generations.
39Sabbath, Circumcision, Levitical Priesthood and
Law of Moses All Temporary
- Gen 1710 "This is My covenant, which you shall
keep, between Me and you and your descendants
after you every male among you shall be
circumcised. - Exo 4015 and you shall anoint them even as you
have anointed their father, that they may
minister as priests to Me and their anointing
will qualify them for a perpetual priesthood
throughout their generations."
40Sabbath, Circumcision, Levitical Priesthood and
Law of Moses All Temporary
- Gal 319 Why the Law then? It was added because
of transgressions, having been ordained through
angels by the agency of a mediator, until the
seed would come to whom the promise had been
made. - Gal 324 Therefore the Law has become our tutor
to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified
by faith. - Gal 325 But now that faith has come, we are no
longer under a tutor.
41Sabbath, Circumcision, Levitical Priesthood and
Law of Moses All Temporary
- Gal 53 And I testify again to every man who
receives circumcision, that he is under
obligation to keep the whole Law. - Gal 54 You have been severed from Christ, you
who are seeking to be justified by law you have
fallen from grace.

apostolic approved examples and necessary
conclusions

Testament - Observing the Sabbath Day is nowhere mentioned in
the New Testament - Divine authority informs us that Christians met
and worshipped on the first day of the week
44Must Have Divine Authority For All We Do In
Serving Christ
- Mat 2125 "The baptism of John was from what
source, from heaven or from men?" And they began
reasoning among themselves, saying, "If we say,
'From heaven,' He will say to us, 'Then why did
you not believe him?' - Col 317 Whatever you do in word or deed, do all
in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks
through Him to God the Father.
45Some of The 9 of 10 Commandments Repeated In New
Covenant
- Rom 138 Owe nothing to anyone except to love
one another for he who loves his neighbor has
fulfilled the law. - Rom 139 For this, "YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT
ADULTERY, YOU SHALL NOT MURDER, YOU SHALL NOT
STEAL, YOU SHALL NOT COVET," and if there is any
other commandment, it is summed up in this
saying, "YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS
YOURSELF."
46Some of The 9 of 10 Commandments Repeated In New
Covenant
- Rom 1310 Love does no wrong to a neighbor
therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.

First Day of The Week
- 1Co 161 Now concerning the collection for the
saints, as I directed the churches of Galatia, so
do you also. - 1Co 162 On the first day of every week each one
of you is to put aside and save, as he may
prosper, so that no collections be made when I
come.

enter it, and those who formerly had good news
preached to them failed to enter because of
disobedience, - Heb 47 He again fixes a certain day, "Today,"
saying through David after so long a time just as
has been said before, "TODAY IF YOU HEAR HIS
VOICE, DO NOT HARDEN YOUR HEARTS."
51The Christian Sabbath Is In Heaven
- Heb 48 For if Joshua had given them rest, He
would not have spoken of another day after that. - Heb 49 So there remains a Sabbath rest for the
people of God.
52The Christian Sabbath Is In Heaven
- Heb 410 For the one who has entered His rest
has himself also rested from his works, as God
did from His. - Heb 411 Therefore let us be diligent to enter
that rest, so that no one will fall, through
following the same example of disobedience.
