The Sabbath Rest
  • Its vital connection to the Good
    News of the Gospel

3
  • The Good News of the Gospel, realized in the holy
history of our Lord Jesus Christ (His birth,
life, death and resurrection), is often described
in the New Testament by the word restMatthew
    1128 Hebrews 42, 3.
  • Since the Fall, this promised rest was linked
  • (in the Old Testament) with the Sabbath
    restExodus 3113, 16 Deuteronomy 515
  • (I Cor. 101-11, the Exodus a type of
    salvation)
  • Isaiah 5813, 14.

4
  • Furthermore, this Sabbath rest was also vitally
linked to the Day of Atonement, the yearly
service that pointed to the culmination of the
plan of redemption in the Sanctuary service
  • Leviticus 1629-31 2326-32.
  • Unfortunately, the Jews applied the above two
requirements in a legalistic manner, instead of
giving them a Gospel application, which is what
the Sanctuary service was all about,
  • (As the next slide will show).

5
  • The Two Requirements
  • Afflict the soul (NKJV), which in Hebrew meant
denying yourself of every aspect of
  • self-righteousness (legalism).
  • A Sabbath of solemn rest (NKJV) which meant
resting completely in the righteousness of
Christ, the Lord of the Sabbath
  • Mark 228 Luke 65.
  • These two requirements are the subjective
application of the GospelNOT I BUT CHRIST.

6
How the Sabbath Rest points to the Gospel
  • The Sabbath is Gods day of rest. It was made for
man (Mark 227) but does not belong to him. God
    said
  • Exodus 2010The seventh day is the Sabbath of
    the Lord thy God.
  • Exodus 3113My Sabbaths you shall keep.
  • Isaiah 5813My holy day...the holy of the
    Lord.

7
  • The Sabbath is Gods seventh day. He created this
world in six days and rested on the seventh. Man,
on the other hand, was created at the end of the
    sixth dayGenesis 126-31 21-3.
  • Therefore, Gods Sabbath is mans first day.
  • The significance of this is, God first works and
than rests from His perfect finished work for
    mankind.
  • Man does not begin by working but resting in
Gods perfect and finished work for him Genesis
    126, 28 Hebrews 26-8.

8
  • Both, creation and redemption were accomplished
    by God through Christ
  • Creation John 13 Ephesians 38, 9.
  • Redemption Romans 324 Galatians 313.
  • 4. Both were finished by Christ on the sixth day.
And in both cases Christ rested on the seventh
    dayJohn 1930, 31 Luke 23-46,
    54.

9
  • 5. The Sabbath therefore becomes a constant
reminder that our perfect and finished redemption
was fulfilled in Christ at the Cross. We can add
    nothing to it.
  • Since the Fall, the Sabbath was given by God as
an everlasting covenant between Him, the
    provider, and mankind, the recipientExodus
    3116 Mark 227, 28.
  • Note Jesus said man (mankind) not Jews.

10
  • This Gospel truth, the Jews completely failed to
realize. The book of Hebrews clearly brings this
    outHebrews 41-4, 9.
  • The Good News of the Gospel is that the Sabbath
rest, which Adam turned his back on when he
sinned (Genesis 319), has been restored by
Christs earthly mission (His birth, life, death
    and resurrection).

11
  • Today, the Sabbath Rest has a threefold
    application to all believers
  • First, it points to a perfect and finished
creation, which fallen humanity has ruined.
  • Second, it points to a perfect and finished
redemption which believers rejoice in, being
reminded weekly by their Sabbath keeping.
  • Finally, It points believers to the blessed hope,
a perfect and finished restorationIsaiah 6622,
    23 Revelation 221-7.

12
  • This is what makes the seventh day Sabbath a day
    of joy and gladness.
  • It is a constant reminder to all believers that
as long as they are resting by faith in the
righteousness of Christ, their salvation is
    guaranteed.
  • May this be your experience
