Title: Date Rape

1
Date Rape
  • An act of aggression and violence

2
Definition of Date Rape (Acquaintance rape)
  • Its not only strangers who rape, 35 to 75
percent of all rapes against women are committed
by men that know their victims.
  • At least one person is making a bad decision
  • Forcing someone into something he or she doesnt
agree to or feel comfortable with
  • Sexual aggression- Pressuring someone to have a
sexual relationship that he or she is not ready
    for
  • Either men or woman can be sexually aggressive,
although in our culture, its more common among
    men to be the aggressors
  • Date rape goes one step further than sexual
    aggression

3
Signs to look out for, when on a date
  • Includes threatening to leave someone if the
person refuses to go further with you, sexually
  • Crying or getting upset at the other persons
    limits
  • Threatening to spread rumors and stories about
the person if he or she doesnt go along with
    your wishes.
  • Can vary from pressuring someone into a just a
good night kiss through pushing someone to make
out or pet to as far as manipulating another
    person into having sex
  • Occurs when actual physical force or the threat
of physical force is used for the man to
  • Display of hostility toward women, misconceptions
about women and their needs, domineering
personality and unrealistic views of women

4
The Facts
  • 52 of women students have experienced some form
    of sexual victimization.
  • Occurs often in college environments, 1 in 8
college women have been victims of rape.1 in 12
college men admitted to sexually abusing women
but did not consider themselves rapists.
  • Of the women raped, almost 75 didn't identify it
    as such.
  • 47 of rapes were by first or casual dates or by
    romantic acquaintances.
  • Over 1/3 of the women didn't discuss the rape
with anyone, and over 90 didn't report it to the
    police.
  • Date rape is one of the least reported crimes
because many women do not realize that they are
being illegally victimized since the act is
    committed by someone they know.

5
How to Protect yourself
  • You have the responsibility to talk openly about
    your sexual expectations
  • Assert yourself in your rights and reject the
sexual stereotype that defines women as passive
    and compliant.

6
What to do
  • Report it to the police.
  • Confide in someone you trust and feel close to.
  • For help in overcoming the effects of rape, seek
counseling. The Counseling Center for Human
    Development offers supportive counseling services
