3Cataloging DVDs- General Comments
- Cataloging a DVD is no different from cataloging
any other manifestation of a film or video. There
are, however, some special features which must be
accounted for. - Consult AACR2 Chapter 7 Motion Pictures and
Videorecordings. - Nancy Olson articles on cataloging DVDs in the
OLAC Newsletter vol. 21 nos. 2/3, June/September
2001 and no. 4, December 2001.
4Cataloging DVDs- General Comments
- Some commercially available DVDs contain movies
or television programs reproduced without changes
from the original. - Many of the DVDs also contain additional features
such as language tracks, interviews with
participants, outtakes from the original filming,
subtitles, closed captioning. - Some DVDs contain additional material such as
games, links to online documentaries, websites,
all of which require the use of a computer. Nancy
Olson refers to these as Enhanced DVDs.
5 Cataloging DVDs- General Comments
- Olson - In cataloging these enhanced DVDs the
predominant component of the DVD is the film
itself these additional features are of little
importance. - BUT it is very useful for library patrons and
other catalogers as well, if relevant notes are
added to the bibliographic record.
6 Cataloging DVDs- General Comments
- Catalogers can include 500 notes to indicate the
presence of special/additional features and if
the DVD is enhanced. - E.g. Coming out (DVD Title)
- 500 Special features include scene access,
theatrical trailer, featurette - "Highlights of East German cinema"
- and more, accessed through
- interactive menus.
-
- 500 DVD-ROM features "Best of Queer
Berlin", an interactive city guide
presented by Siegessäule.
7Cataloging DVDs- General notes
- There is a lot of information on the containers
of most DVDs, which can be placed in a 500
(General note) field. - Catalogers advised to put information in this
field if they consider the information important.

- the original version to fit the

work in a player produced for region 1 (North
America). - Generally ignore this information if cataloging

our users will have region 1 DVD players, and we
will be cataloging mostly region 1 DVDs (Olson).
15Cataloging DVDs- System requirements Notes (538)
- System Requirements Note ( 538) on region for DVD

language and what type of sound track is
available for each language. - Use field 546 to record this information. Notes
can be combined or listed in separate fields. - Before recording information, check chart against
