The Birth of a Pioneer
  • Amelia Earhart was born on July 24, 1897.
  • She was born in Atchison, Kansas.
  • She was born in her rich grandmothers house.

Amelias Family
  • She had a sister named Muriel.
  • Her mothers side of the family was very rich.
  • She was especially fond of her father, and she
    thought he was smart, funny and handsome.
  • Her father had trouble keeping a job.

Childhood
  • In the summer of 1909, before Amelias eighth
    grade year, she went to the Iowa state fair and
    saw her first airplane. At the time she didnt
    think much of it.
  • She went to the world fair, where she saw her
    first roller coaster. When she went home, she
    built one of her own.
  • One December she went sledding with her sister.
    She was going so fast she went right under a
    horse.

Teenage Years
  • Her father couldn't keep a job so her family
    split up.
  • Her mother took her and her sister to a rooming
    house in Chicago.

Education
  • Amelia Earhart went to Hyde Park High School in
    Chicago.
  • She was a good college student .
  • She dreamed of going to a first-rate college, but
    there wasnt enough money in the family.
  • There was enough money to send her to a good
    private school for girls.

Adult Life
  • Worked as a volunteer nurse during world war I
    from 1914-1918.
  • Moved in with her mother, who lived in California
    in 1920, where she became fascinated with
    aviation, which was dangerous, even for men.
  • She became a social worker in 1926, but she
    continued to fly planes.
  • She married George Palmer Putram.

  • She took flying lessons from one of the only
    women pilots at the time, Neta Snook.
  • She purchased her very own plane, which was
    unusual at the time for women.
  • In 1937 she became the first woman pilot to fly
    across the Atlantic Ocean.

The Disappearance
  • Amelia disappeared on July 2, 1937, along with
    her navigator Fred Noonan.
  • She is probably deceased, because she was never
    found and it has been 71 years since she was last
    heard from.
  • A giant search was issued, but neither she or
    Fred Noonan were found.

  • She was one of the first female pilots.
  • She was the first woman pilot to fly across the
    Atlantic Ocean.

    she shouldnt fly a plane simply because she was
    a woman.
