2Tsunami Facts
- A tsunami is a a series of great sea waves caused
by and underwater earthquake, landslide or
volcanic eruption. Also called a wave train.
These are different than tidal waves. - Violent movement of the Earths tectonic plates
displaces an enormous amount of water, sending
powerful shock waves in every direction - Affected areas from Africa to Thailand to Sumatra
- Tsunamis have been relatively rare in the Indian
Ocean - These waves can be 60 miles long and can be as
far as one hour apart. - They can cross entire oceans without losing much
energy - Tsunamis can travel unnoticed on the surface at
speed of up to 500 miles per hour - Tsunamis may be less than a foot in height as it
travels. As it reaches shallow water, the top of
the wave moves faster than the bottom causing the
sea to rise dramatically - Tsunamis have been known to rise up 100 feet, but
usually 10 feet. The recent tsunami rose 30 feet - Many people say a tsunami sounds like a freight
train coming - The Pacific Ocean generates the most tsunamis
3Warning Signs of a tsunami

possible tsunami - Rapidly receding ocean
- The first wave may not be the worst
