Tsunami Facts
  • A tsunami is a a series of great sea waves caused
by and underwater earthquake, landslide or
volcanic eruption. Also called a wave train.
These are different than tidal waves.
  • Violent movement of the Earths tectonic plates
displaces an enormous amount of water, sending
powerful shock waves in every direction
  • Affected areas from Africa to Thailand to Sumatra
  • Tsunamis have been relatively rare in the Indian
    Ocean
  • These waves can be 60 miles long and can be as
    far as one hour apart.
  • They can cross entire oceans without losing much
    energy
  • Tsunamis can travel unnoticed on the surface at
speed of up to 500 miles per hour
  • Tsunamis may be less than a foot in height as it
travels. As it reaches shallow water, the top of
the wave moves faster than the bottom causing the
    sea to rise dramatically
  • Tsunamis have been known to rise up 100 feet, but
usually 10 feet. The recent tsunami rose 30 feet
  • Many people say a tsunami sounds like a freight
    train coming
  • The Pacific Ocean generates the most tsunamis

3
