Texas Independence

• Texas in a state of revolt since 1836 created
  treaties with France, Holland, Belgium, and Great
  Britain interested. (Monroe Doctrine)
• James K. Polk elected on an expansionists
  platform. Tyler invited Texas to join the Union
  under an implied mandate.
• Mexico a little upset ?

Santa Anna

• Exiled in Cuba w/teenage bride
• US brought him back to Mexico where instead of
  helping the US, he raised an army for defense.
• Gen. Kearney took California
• Gen. Taylor pushed south to Buena Vista
• Gen Winfield Scott Old Fuss and Feathers took
  Vera Cruz and Mexico City
• Nicholas Trists second treaty stuck in Feb 1848.
  The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.

• U.S. received Texas and territory to the west to
  the Pacific and north to the Oregon Territory for
  18 million.
• Slavery issue again in new territories
• Wilmot Proviso an amendment stating no slavery
  in new Mexican territory.
