Title: Taking care of taped materials
1Taking care of taped materials
- Audio cassette tapes, video tapes, films, and
photographic negatives
2There are many different kinds of tapes.
Some of which you are probably very familiar.
Video cassettes
3And some types that you may never have seen.
These are older 18 mm movie films. We do have
some in our archives.
This is the type of projector needed to show the
18 mm movie films. We do not have any of these
projectors.
4This is a reel-to-reel tape and tape
recorder/player. It is the forerunner of our
audio cassettes. We do not have any of these,
nor do we have a player.
5You probably have seen negatives from which
photographs are made, but they are rapidly being
replaced by digital cameras.
Grandma, what are they?
6This is 35 mm microfilm. We have many rolls of
this.
These are sheets of microfiche. We have many
drawers of this.
This is our microfilm/fiche reader/printer. You
will need to learn to operate it, but please do
not change the lens or the document carriers.
7All tape should be handled as little as possible.
Try to touch only on the very top of the
microfiche and at the very beginning of the
microfilm. Oils and dirt from your hands will
damage the film.
8Tapes should be stored upright, not stacked
sideways.
9Keep all tapes and photographs out of the hot sun.
If it is too hot for you to sit in your car, it
is too hot for tapes!
10But too cold is not good either!
Tapes are best kept in a room between 45 and 70
degrees Fahrenheit with a relative humidity of
40.
11Do not use tattle tape with CDs, DVDs, or
videos. Do not sensitize, nor desensitize these
items.
12Tapes should be kept away from magnetic fields.
Magnets exist in places that may surprise you.
13Hand held metal detectors may have a strong
magnetic field and damage film.
Airport baggage x-ray machines will probably not
damage your films.
14When materials are returned and BEFORE they are
checked back in, they should be inspected for any
damage.
15Give all damaged materials to the librarian in
charge of book repair. As of September 18, 2002
this was Ms. Brannan.
16Question
You know where in the library we keep our tapes,
but at home where should you store your tapes?
C. In an air-conditioned room that is not overhea
ted, and is protected from dirt and dust.
A. In the freezer.
B. On top of the fireplace.
