12TV Rule 1
- NO PORTRAIT-ORIENTED SHOTS!
- LANDSCAPE SHOTS ONLY!
13Last week Hopewell High cheerleaders won the
state championship. Is there anything wrong with
this photo?
14The photo is good but we only received this one
photo. Television needs motion. We cant show a
still photo for too long so we would be forced to
limit this good story to less than 10 seconds of
airtime maximum.
15TV Rule 2
- We need multiple photos!
- No less than 3 photos minimum
- 5 photos is better
- No more than 9 photos maximum
- Actual number may depend on event
16Here are 9 photos more than enough... But where
are they? What are they doing?
17This is what J.A. BizTown looks like. Any of
these shots would be good establishing shots to
help identify the setting and tell the story.
(These would be GREAT shots if they also had
students in them too.)
18TV Rule 3
- We need a variety of different photos!
- Tell the story
- Establishing shot (wide, showing the scene)
- Different medium and close shots. Not all
similar shots. - Its okay to stage a few smiling shots looking at
the camera but dont forget the candid action
shots. - Its not all about the children.
- Its about what the children are doing.
19Recap Top 3 Rules To Remember
- Landscape shots only. Wide, not tall.
- 3-5 photos minimum (no more than 9 max)
- Variety of different shots, including at least
one establishing shot.
20More Tips
- Focus!
- Beware of backlighting
- If possible, avoid indoor shooting towards
windows - If possible, have the sun behind you
- Know your camera
- Does the flash use red eye reduction? If so,
dont move after the first flash and warn your
subjects not to move either. - If the room is too big for a flash, would
stabilize work better? - Dont worry about megapixels
- TV uses only 0.4 megapixels,
- Even HDTV uses only 2.0 megapixels
- Website story photos use less than 0.1 megapixels
- Dont shoot too tight

22Television crops 10 off the edges off. Much
better to be a little wide than a little tight.
23Plus, remember that CMS-TV will also put an
informational graphic on top of video and photos.
