Title: Dental Licensure

1
Dental Licensure
2
Mutual Recognition
  • When one state recognizes the licensing exam or
    licensure requirements from another state
  • For Example The current licensure exam in NY
state is recognized by all other states in the
North East and also by some other states outside
    of the North East region

3
States Accepting the NERB Examination
  • NERB Participating States/Jurisdictions
  • CONNECTICUT
  • DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA
  • ILLINOIS
  • MAINE
  • MARYLAND
  • MASSACHUSETTS
  • MICHIGAN
  • NEW HAMPSHIRE
  • NEW JERSEY
  • NEW YORK
  • OHIO
  • PENNSYLVANIA
  • RHODE ISLAND
  • VERMONT
  • WEST VIRGINIA
  • Recognizing Jurisdictions
  • KANSAS
  • KENTUCKY
  • MINNESOTA
  • MISSOURI
  • NEBRASKA
  • UTAH

4
Licensure by Credentials
  • When one states recognizes the licensure exam
from another state as long as that person has
practiced dentistry for (X) number of years
  • Some states give licensure by credentials after 5
years, 3 years, 1 year, etc. Some states even
give licensure by credentials after 0 years,
which is like mutual recognition but with a catch

5
NERB
  • The North East Regional Boards
  • This board exam is the current licensure exam in
NY state and all other North East schools
  • Many problems with this exam
  • Solution NY state is no longer accepting the
NERB as a licensure exam as of 2006

6
PGY1
  • PGY1 is a mandatory 5th year residency with an
    accredited residency program
  • As of 2006, PGY1 is the only form of licensure
    accreditation accepted in NY state
  • Practical way to achieve mutual recognition
  • This is both good and bad

7
GME Funding
  • GME funding for dental residency programs was
    recently cut
  • In the past, all accredited dental residency
    programs were paid positions
  • Now, only hospital and some private residency
    program are paid positions
  • This could lead to many future problems

8
ASDAs Position
  • The American Student Dental Association strongly
supports high quality dental education, and
favors voluntary postgraduate training and the
    creation of additional postgraduate
    opportunities. The American Student Dental
Association is opposed to a mandatory one-year
post-graduate program or the addition of an
additional year to the present dental curriculum.
  • The American Student Dental Association supports
students having the option to complete a ADA
accredited postgraduate residency program in lieu
of a clinical licensure exam for the purpose of
    initial licensure.

9
Future Possibilities and Problems
  • PGY1 becomes universal
  • Lack of residency programs
  • Ample residency programs (few funded programs)
  • PGY1 fails
  • NERB is no longer offered in NY state
  • Students have to drive themselves and their
patients to another state dental school to take
    the NERBs

10
Scenarios
  • NY state resident staying in NY state
  • NY state resident planning to leave NY state at
    some point in career
  • Non-NY state residents planning to leave NY state
    upon graduation
