Title: Location of the lifeboat station 1
1- Location of the lifeboat station 1

- Location of Lymington, Courtesy of Minimap.com
- This station is located in Lymington adjacent to
a harbour, therefore any depths issues shall not
be a problem. Boat capacity potentially can be
large due to the proximity of the harbour. A
large settlement is nearby therefore services
such as power and water again should not cause
problems. There is easy access and parking for
the crew and emergency services. As there is a
settlement nearby, it can be safe to assume that
the ground conditions should be suitable for a
structure. Much sea traffic occurs in this area
due the marina, ideal for a lifeguard station.

- This station is located in Calshot on a headland
adjacent to the sea, therefore any depths issues
shall not be a problem. There is potential for
large boat capacity due to amount of shoreline
exposed to sea. A Retail and activities park is
nearby therefore services such as power and water
again should not cause problems but access and
parking could be a problem due to congestion
potential from people using the activities park.
Ground conditions can be assumed to be ok due to
other structures on site. Ideal location for a
lifeguard station to protect the centre of the
Solent, which caters Southampton.
Station 2
3- Other possible locations
- The new forest dissects the two sites, therefore
possible locations in this zone are very limited.
Due to limited settlements, hence sparse
population, essential services could possibly be
inadequate and easy access difficult. Thus a
location within the area of the New Forest should
not be contemplated for this project.

The location of the Portsmouth Lifeboat Station
looks very good in many ways. It could be a great
location just improving some aspects (access and
parking)

22Lifeboat Location Yarmouth
Yarmouth is a small town that is situated on the
north face of the Isle of White. The lifeboat
station at Yarmouth is a very busy station,
situated 9 miles from Mudeford, 10 miles from
Calshot and 20 miles from Bembridge. The station
currently provides all-weather cover in the
Western Solent and from Hengistbury Head to St
Catherine's and out into the main channel
shipping lanes. (RNLI, 1999) Yarmouth lifeboat
station operates the largest class of lifeboat,
the Severn class.
Picture from Google Earth
- The sea conditions at Yarmouth will be mostly
sheltered from the english channel and the
harbour wall will shield the lifeboat station and
the rest of the harbour from any storms and high
winds. - Yarmouth is an ideal base for a lifeboat station
as it has easy access to areas along the solent
as well as the busy commercial routes in and out
of Southamton. It also has easy access to the
English channel. There should also be easy access
to any materials or resources needed during
construction phase. - A major problem would be the space restructions
in the harbour that could effect the construction
of a new lifeboat station.
23Lifeboat Location Mudeford
Mudeford is a small town that is situated near
Bournmouth, Dorset. The lifeboat station is built
upon sand banks at the exit of the River
Stour. The lifeboat station at Mudeford has a
small inshore lifeboat that capable of patrolling
the busy beachs at Bournmouth, which is essential
during the busy tourism season. (rnli,
2007a) With a larger lifeboat station at this
loaction then it would become possible for the
lifeboat to be able to answer calls from further
afield and be able to answer calls of distress
from all the way along the solent.
Picture from Google Earth
- A disadvantage of the Mudeford location is the
surrounding geology as just east of Mudeford near
Highcliff and Barton-on-sea there are major
problems with coastal defences due to large
amounts of longshore drift. Altough Mudeford
appears to be sheltered from the worst of it
there may be a possibility that it could effect
any large structures built along this stretch of
coast. - Mudeford would be an ideal base for a lifeboat
station as it has easy access to areas along the
solent including the busy tourist beach at
Bournmouth. There should also be easy access to
any materials or resources needed during
construction phase and other emergency services
due to its close proximity to Bournmouth.
24Unfeasable Locations
Picture from Google Earth
- . The following locations along the south of
England Coast are not feasable for a lifeboat
station due to access or geological problems. - The mud cliffs between Mudeford and Barton-on-sea
are unstable due to a big erosion problemcaused
by both waves and wind therefore it would not be
a good idea to build here. - The same could be said at the cliffs on the Isle
of Whites Coast they are eroding and would need
some kind of coasteal defence if the lifeboat
station was built here there is also a big
problem with access along this coastline and
getting the construction equipment in place to
build the station will be a problem..
