Ten Commandments of Computer Use
  • Thou shall not use a computer to harm other
    people
  • Thou shall not interfere with other peoples
    computer work
  • Thou shall not snoop around other peoples
    computer files
  • Thou shall not use a computer to steal
  • Thou shall not use a computer to bear false
    witness
  • Thou shall not copy or use software for which you
    have not paid
  • Thou shall not use other peoples computer
    resources with out their consent or permission
  • Thou shall steal other peoples work
  • Thou shall think about the social consequences of
    programs written or systems designed
  • Thou shall always use the computer in a
    respectful way

  • Unwanted messages sent through a list of user by
    e-mail
  • Mostly commercial advertising
  • 24 million small business and only 1 use e-mail
    advertising would be 657 e-mails a day
  • Responding to be removed from the list actually
    may verify your address
  • Chain letters are Spam-do not forward these
    messages and liter the Information Superhighway

Viruses
  • Usually come in e-mail attachments and when
    opened, the virus attacks
  • I Love You spread everywhere quickly
  • Never open an attachment in an e-mail message
    that is unfamiliar

Lurking
  • Lurking means to participate in a conversation on
    the Internet without responding to messages
  • Lurking is sometimes a good thing
  • Lurk in a chat room or newsgroup before you join
    the conversation to know what is going on

Flames and Firefighters
  • Flame is a message written in anger
  • Think about what you write before you write it
    because you may regret it later
  • Firefighters help when flaming gets out of hand
    especially in a newsgroup or listserv

Shouting, Emoticons, and 3-Letter Acronyms
  • Shouting on the Internet is done in ALL CAPS!
  • Make sure that your Caps Lock button is off
  • Emoticons are small statements of emotion showed
    through characters such as a smiley face ?
  • TLAs (3-Letter Acronyms) are shortened words
    into a 3 letter phrase to lessen the amount of
    keyboarding necessary to write a response
