Title: Netiquette and Ethics
1Netiquette and Ethics
2The 10 Rules of Netiquette
- What is netiquette? Simply stated, it's network
etiquette.
31. Remember the Human
- The golden rule your parents and your
kindergarten teacher taught you was pretty
simple do unto others as you'd have others do
unto you. - Imagine how you'd feel if you were in the other
person's shoes.
42. Adhere to Real Life Standards
- Adhere to the same standards of behavior online
that you follow in real life. - Don't believe anyone who says, "the only ethics
out there are what you can get away with." - Breaking the law is bad netiquette.
53. Know Where You Are in Cyberspace
- Netiquette varies from domain to domain.
- What's perfectly acceptable in one area may be
dreadfully rude in another. - For example, in most TV discussion groups,
passing on idle gossip is perfectly permissible.
But throwing around unsubstantiated rumors in a
journalists' mailing list will make you very
unpopular there.
64. Respect Other People's Time Bandwidth
- When you send email or post to a discussion
group, you're taking up other people's time. - It's your responsibility to ensure that the time
they spend reading your posting isn't wasted.
75. Make Yourself Look Good Online
- Don't give the impression that the net is a cold,
cruel place full of people who just can't wait to
insult each other. - You won't be judged by the color of your skin,
eyes, or hair, your weight, your age, or your
clothing.
86. Share Expert Knowledge
- Help to increase knowledge of other users
97. Help Keep Flame Wars Under Control
- "Flaming" is what people do when they express a
strongly held opinion without holding back any
emotion.
108. Respect Other People's Privacy
- Of course, you'd never dream of going through
your colleagues' desk drawers. So naturally you
wouldn't read their email either.
119. Don't Abuse Your Power
- Knowing more than others, or having more power
than they do, does not give you the right to take
advantage of them.
1210. Be Forgiving of Other People's Mistakes
- Everyone was a network newbie once.
- Having good manners yourself doesn't give you
license to correct everyone else.
13Computer Ethics
- Ethics is the field of study that is concerned
with questions of value, that is, judgments about
what behavior is "good" or "bad". - Ethical judgments are no different in the area of
computing from those in any other area. Computers
raise problems of privacy, ownership, theft, and
power, to name but a few.
14Why Are Ethics Compromised
- Greed
- Revenge
- To get attention
15Virus Writers
- People who write viruses are usually people that
would like to get attention. They would like for
people to know how smart or how good of a
programmer they are. - They also may be writing viruses because they
want to feel like they are getting back at
society in some strange way.
16Hackers
- Hackers are usually associated with greed. They
are trying to break in and gain something. - Some hackers may be trying gain attention.
17Dont Confuse Stuff With Success
- You are neither a better or worse person for
the kind of car you drive, the size of your home,
or the performance of your mutual funds. Remember
what really matters in your life.
18Imagine
- Imagine for a moment that today was your last
day on Earth. Now, make a list for yourself of
all the things that you feel you have
accomplished, all the things you are proud of,
and all the things that make you happy.
19What Is on Your List
- Your car
- Your stereo
- Your television
- Your salary
20No
- What is on the list are the fundamental
elements of a satisfied life your relationship
with friends and family, the contribution you
have made to others lives, the celebrated events
of your life. Those are the building blocks of
your list.
21- Many of us live day to day as if the opposite
was true. Instead of appreciating what is truly
important and making that our priority, we
collect things and indicators of success without
questioning just what success really means.
22Surveys and Daily Observations
- In a study using surveys and daily observation,
the availability of material resources was nine
times less important to happiness than the
availability of personal resources such as
friends and family. - Diener and Fujita 1995
23Computer Ethics
24Do . . .
- think about the social consequences of
information put on the computer. - use a computer in ways that show consideration
and respect.
25Dont . . .
- use a computer to harm other people.
- interfere with other peoples computer work.
- snoop around in, or copy, other peoples files.
- use a computer to steal.
26Dont . . .
- use a computer to spread lies or rumors.
- use or copy software for which you have not paid.
(unless its shareware) - use other peoples computer resources without
authorization. - use other peoples intellectual property without
their consent.
27Summarize
- Dont take the risk of being unethical because
you think that the personal gain will make you
happy. - Youll find that the guilt of being unethical
will hinder your ability to find enjoyment from
what you may have acquired.
