Quote Spicegrls, 11, f
  • I change my "character" every time that I am
chatting, the thing that I cannot do with my
    friends.

5
Quote Jedi5, 10 , m
  • The web is the only place where you can insult
and bully someone and not have to worry about
    getting hit or hurt.

6
Chat
  • A chat room is a web site, part of a web site, or
part of an online service such as America online,
that provides a venue for communities of users
with a common interest to communicate in real
    time
  • What do they look like?

7
Instant Messaging
  • A type of communications service that enables you
to create a private chat room with another
    individual. Typically, the instant messaging
system alerts you whenever somebody on your
private list is online. You can then initiate a
chat session with that particular individual.
  • ICQ.
  • MSN.

8
Discussion Groups
  • Discussion Board is a computerized meeting and
announcement system that allows people to carry
on discussions and share information without the
need for individuals to be on the computer at the
same time.   You can post messages that others
may view at a later date. What is different,
however, is that others may view these messages
from anywhere in the world with a computer
    connected to the Internet.
  • A Discussion Board

Strategies for Parents and the Home
  • Internet at home
  • Put your connected computer in a well-used area
    of your home
  • Develop family agreements on internet usage, post
    these on your computer
  • Decide on which times of the day kids can be
    online
  • How long they are allowed online
  • What are family appropriate areas on the internet
  • Learn about the internet, and what your kids are
    doing on it
  • Accompany your younger kids online as they learn
    their way around
  • Have them share with you what they know and where
    they go
  • Encourage an open dialogue with teens regarding
    internet conduct

10
Strategies for Parents and the Home
  • Internet Safety for Kids.
  • Never give out your full name, home address or
telephone number. Giving a nickname is enough.
Giving only the country you live in is
    recommended.
  • If you are new to the net ask an adult to surf
    the net with you.
  • Do not reply to emails asking you to join
inappropriate clubs, email lists or forums..
  • Tell your parents and then your internet service
provider (ISP) if someone is harassing you with
emails or messages on the internet.
  • At any time if you come across any material or
individuals that make you feel uncomfortable tell
    your parents immediately.
  • When using internet chat programs and
communication programs learn how to suppress your
IP - if you do not know how, ask an adult who can
show you. This prevents your location from being
    sent online.
  • Do not send pictures to people you don't know.

11
Strategies for Parents and the Home
  • Chat Rooms.
  • DON'T give out personal information such as your
    address, telephone number, parents' work
address/telephone number, or the name and
location of your school without your parents'
    permission.
  • DON'T agree to get together with someone you
    "meet" online.
  • DON'T send a person your picture or anything else
without first checking with your parents.
  • DON'T respond to any messages that are mean or in
any way make you feel uncomfortable. Tell your
parents right away so that they can contact the
online service or monitor of the chat room.
  • DON'T use foul language in chat rooms.
  • DON'T disrespect other chatters. If you do not
agree with a chatter, express your opinion in a
    respectful manner.
  • DON'T enter a chat room posing as another
chatter, or take another chatter's nickname.
  • DON'T use your real name as your nickname.
