Definition
  • Netiquette is Internet Etiquette
  • Provides guidelines and rules for posting
messages to online services and Internet
    newsgroups
  • Formatting keep it simple
  • Typically enforced by other users they are not
afraid to tell you when you break a rule

4
Ten Basic Rules - 1
  • Remember the Human
  • Remember when typing all you have are the words
to read no nonverbal cues it is easy
misunderstand those you are communicating with
  • The impersonal nature of the computer allows
individuals to act in a manner they normally
    would not
  • Ask yourself Would you say it to the persons
    face?

5
Ten Basic Rules - 2
  • Adhere to the same standards of behavior online
that you follow in real life
  • Be ethical
  • Remember there is a human being on the other side
    of the computer

6
Ten Basic Rules - 3
  • Know where you are in cyberspace
  • Lurk before you leap
  • When you enter a site that is new to you, take a
look around. Observe the conversation or read the
archives. Get a sense of how the others act. Then
    go ahead and participate.

7
Ten Basic Rules - 4
  • Respect other peoples time and bandwith
  • You are not the center of cyberspace other
people have different points of views and
concerns other than yours. Don't expect instant
responses to all your questions, and don't assume
that all readers will agree with you
  • There's a limit to the amount of data that any
piece of wiring can carry at any given moment.

8
Ten Basic Rules - 5
  • Make yourself look good online
  • You will be judged by the quality of your
    writing. Spelling and grammar count.
  • Make sure your notes are clear - proofread

9
Ten Basic Rules - 6
  • Share expert knowledge
  • Pay attention to the content of your writing. Be
sure you know what you're talking about
  • Make sure your notes are logical

10
Ten Basic Rules - 7
  • Help keep flame wars under control
  • Be pleasant and polite. Don't use offensive
language, and don't be confrontational for the
    sake of confrontation.
  • Flaming is someone expressing their strong
opinion without holding back on emotion or using
any tact, not against Netiquette rules, however
    excess amounts are discouraged

11
Ten Basic Rules - 8
  • Respect other peoples privacy
  • Failing to respect other people's privacy is not
just bad Netiquette. It could also cost you your
    job.

12
Ten Basic Rules - 9
  • Dont abuse your power
  • Some people in cyberspace have more power than
others. Knowing more than others, or having more
power than others, does not give you the right to
take advantage of them. i.e. System
Administrators should never read private email.

13
Ten Basic Rules - 10
  • Be forgiving of other peoples mistakes
  • Everyone was a newbie at some point in time.
Errors and mistakes happen, spelling or any of
the other rules listed be forgiving
  • If you do inform someone of a mistake, point it
out politely and privately rather than in public.
