Suggestions for NR and QR
  • If the EDCS definition is intended to represent
the same concept as a definition from an external
reference, then we can make a NR to that
    definition.
  • If the EDCS definition is derived from but does
NOT represent the same concept as the external
definition then we can make a QR to that
    definition.
  • Example A_OR_B mapping to A and to B separately

6
When are two definitions the same?
Consider these definitions of aluminum
  • A light silvery ductile and malleable metal, not
readily tarnished by air, which is a chemical
element, atomic no. 13 (Symbol Al) - The New
    Shorter Oxford English Dictionary
  • A silvery-white, ductile metallic element, the
most abundant in the earth's crust but found only
in combination, chiefly in bauxite. Having good
conductive and thermal properties, it is used to
    form many hard, light, corrosion-resistant
alloys. Atomic number 13 atomic weight 26.98
melting point 660.2C boiling point 2,467C
specific gravity 2.69 valence 3. - The American
Heritage Dictionary of the English Language,
    Fourth Edition
  • A lightweight silvery metal used either pure or
as an alloy for making utensils or fittings where
lightness is an advantage. - Oxford American
    Dictionary
  • A silvery light and malleable metal, not
tarnished by air. - The Pocket Oxford Dictionary
  • A silvery lightweight metal, that is a chemical
element. It does not rust. -Webster's New World
    Dictionary for Young Reader

7
When are two definitions the same?
  • The five definitions of aluminum on the previous
slide all are intensions of the same concept.
  • Therefore, all five definitions are the same in
the sense that the set of (object) instances that
satisfy each definition (that is, the extensions
of the concepts) are the same.
  • So, two definitions are the same if the set of
objects that satisfy each of them is the same.

8
Minor changes to definitions
  • A change in definition A to create definition B
is minor if A and B are intensions of the same
    concept.
  • It is difficult to give a complete specification
of minor changes, but such changes include
  • replacement of words by synonyms
  • changes in grammar or sentence structure that do
    not change meaning.
