2Starting With Inspiration 7
Inspiration is a great program for organizing
your thoughts, creating webs, and various other
tasks. In this tutorial, I will teach you how to
make a web about yourself.
To open Inspiration
3Basics
Once you have inspiration open you will see the
screen below. I will now give you an overview of
some of the main items on this screen.
4 Basic Buttons
5Rapid Fire
To add a series of connected ideas to a main idea
quickly, use Rapid Fire. This is great for
brainstorming! Go now and click the Rapid Fire
button. Then Type School, Home, Family and
Hobbies. Hit enter after each entry. When you are
done, click off the Rapid Fire tool.
6Create
The Create button is another way to add a linked
symbol . Lets add a subtopic to the School topic.
Click on the School topic. Next you will click on
the create button. You have 8 choice in the
direction you want the topic to go, lets put it
to the right.
Next use the create tool to add at least one
subtopic to each of the other 3 main topics.
7Spell
Spell check and check often. Remember to proof
read your work also. Reading it out loud to
yourself is another way to catch mistakes.
8Symbols
You have hundreds of symbols that you can put
into your diagram. We are going to put one in for
our school.
- In your diagram, click on the symbol named
school. - In the symbol palette, click on the down arrow.
- Go down to Work-School
- Select School
- Click on any of these school related pictures to
put one of them into your diagram. - Now put at least 3 other symbols into your
diagram.
9Bottom Toolbar
- To learn the features of the bottom toolbar, we
need to enter a new symbol. - Click on any blank space in your diagram
- In the symbol palette go under animals, and
select animals1 - Click on the light brown dog.
- Give the dog a name
Change the following about your dogs name

12Arrange
That was still a little messy, so now we are
going to learn how to use the Arrange button!
- The first is a way to just move one symbol at a
time. - Click and drag any symbol you want to move.
- Now move at least 3 more of your symbols.
- Click on the Arrange button
- Choose one of the Diagram Types and click ok.
- If you dont like the change, you can always UNDO
(CTRL-Z). - Play around with the different arrangements till
you get one you like.
13Link
- Sometimes you may need to create a link from one
symbol to another. For example, our dog isnt
linked to anything right now. Lets include the
dog as part of our family. - Move the dog near the rest of your family
- Click on the Link button
- Click on the family symbol, then on the dog.
- Thats all there is to it!
14Note
Sometimes you may want to put in more details
about a symbol, but there just isnt enough room
in the diagram. This is when we will use the Note
button. The note button allows us to elaborate on
a symbol in a collapsible box. Lets use one of
our family members to learn this skill.
- Click on one of your Family members
- Then click on the Note button
- In the box that appears, type some details about
the person. - You can collapse the box by clicking in the upper
left hand corner. - Now add notes to 2 other symbols.
15Outline
This button allows you to turn your diagram into
an outline. You can also create an outline and
turn it into a diagram. Lets take a look at what
our diagram looks like as an outline. Click on
the Outline button.
16Hyperlink
You can use the Hyperlink button to link your
diagram to a web page, an e-mail address, an
existing file, or a blank Inspiration web.
- Click on your school symbol
- Click the Hyperlink button
- Under Hyperlink Options, choose Web Page
- Then in the box Link To type WWW.Hilliard.k12.oh
.us - Click ok and you have a Hyperlink
17Finishing
We are now ready to put some finishing touches on
our diagram to prepare it for printing or
exporting. There are many thing you can do in
Inspiration that this tutorial hasnt covered, so
feel free to explore. I suggest that you save
before exploring, just incase something goes
wrong. Have fun as you finish the Diagram about
yourself!!!
18Backgrounds
Lets put more color in your Diagram, by adding a
Background.
- On the menu bar, click on Effect
- Go down to Background color
- Choose a color from the Palette
- Keep changing the color till you find the one
that looks right
Remember Make sure your text shows clearly on
the background you choose!
19Printing
- We now have a pretty good looking diagram. Before
we print, lets check for mistakes one last time. - Spell check
- Read through everything checking for grammar
mistakes - Check all of your symbols and text so they are
easily seen - Now we are ready to print
- Lets set up for printing 1st
- Click on file
- Select Page Setup
- Select Portrait or Landscape
- Select Fit to one page
- Add a Header/Footer if you want
20Exporting
Sometimes you may want to make a diagram to put
into another document, or a website. Exporting
will let you save the diagram in a picture
format. Lets save our Diagram as a JPEG
- Click on File
- Select export
- Select JPG
- Click on Save
- You now have a JPEG File
21Templates
Now that youve made your 1st diagram of your
own, I want to show you where to look for
templates that may give you a head start on your
work.
- Select File
- Open Template
- Then double click on a template to open it.
- You can then use the skills you learned in this
tutorial to complete the diagram
