Title: The Changing Face of Computing

1
The Changing Face of Computing
All kinds of people become computer scientists
Computer scientists become all sorts of people
2
Bettina Bair, Educator
Profiles in Computing
  • Bettina is a senior lecturer at the Ohio State
University. She loves teaching students about
    computing.
  • Computer systems architecture was the first
class where I really got excited about computing.
  • I like peeking into the magicians hat to see
    how the tricks are done.

Even I get tired of looking at computer screens
at times. Then I really enjoy quiet time with my
family, garden and pets. I also like traveling to
other countries.

Binaebi Akah, Student
Profiles in Computing
  • Binaebi is currently pursuing her undergrad
degree in Computer Science and Engineering, with
a minor in English. She continues to read as much
fiction as she can, and through her research for
    her novels.
  • Binaebis not worried about getting a job when
    she gets out of school.
  • She feels computer science is a well-rounded
career choice that will open doors for her to do
almost anything when she graduates. Her interest
is in computer graphics, one of the faster
    growing fields.

As for the lack of women in her major, Binaebi
says its not a major concern. While women in the
field do stand out, she likes it that way. "Even
if I was in a class of all girls, I would still
want to be the best one," she says.

Anita Borg, Advocate
Profiles in Computing
Anita was a pioneering computer scientist who
worked to break the "silicon ceiling" that often
kept women and minorities from rising to the top
of the high-tech industry, who founded the
Institute for Women and Technology, She was also
an appointee in the Clinton administration
5
Janis Mitchell, Entrepreneur
Profiles in Computing
  • Janis Mitchell has been recognized for her many
    accomplishments as an entrepreneur and
businesswoman. In 2003, she was named Small
Business Person of the Year by the Columbus
Chamber of Commerce. The next year she was
listed as one of Columbuss Most Remarkable
    Women.
  • She is currently included on Columbus Women to
Watch for her accomplishments and involvement in
the community while growing her company.
  • Mitchell founded Info Fortress Solutions in
January 2000, which she then sold to Betrusted,
Inc., the worlds largest security company.

6
Maria Palazzi, Artist
Profiles in Computing
  • Professor Palazzi is regarded as one of the
leading animation educators in America. She has
been nominated for awards from Clio, SIGGRAPH,
    and international film festivals.
  • She's the director of the Advanced Computing
Center for Art and Design (ACCAD) and an
associate professor of design as well. Both roles
    immerse her deeply in technology.

"That's what I love about working here," she
says. "People are always doing new things, and
it's often relevant to other work or areas of
research." "We couldn't teach our classes
without the technology resources we have," she
says. Her ACCAD staff build a Web site for almost
everything on which they work. She likes how the
Web fosters collaboration and how it can create
small communities of people sharing their
knowledge.

Dr. Tracy Camp, Researcher
Profiles in Computing
Dr. Tracy Camp is an associate professor in the
Department of Mathematical and Computer Sciences
at the Colorado School of Mines.
In 1996, the National Science Foundation awarded
Dr. Camp a prestigious Career Grant for her
research in the area of mobile computing and
networking. This grant changed her life and has
led to several more funded projects. (She is
currently involved with four research grants that
total over 1.8 million dollars in federal
funding.) While she publishes in prestigious
venues and has over 900 citations to date, she is
most proud that simulation code developed by her
research group has been requested from (and
shared with) more than 270 research groups in 41
countries. Tracy shares her life with Max (born
in 2000), Emma (born in 2003), her stay-at-home
husband (Glen), and two pets (a cat Scully and a
dog Jessie). All six of them are vegetarians and
tremendously enjoy their lives in the foothills
of the Rockies.
